Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive on-site gap assessments of client facilities and programs against GFSI standards (such as SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000) and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and validate bespoke Food Safety Plans, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and HARPC (Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls).
  • Act as a subject matter expert on all current and emerging regulations, including FDA FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act), USDA rules, and international food laws.
  • Lead clients through the preparation and execution of third-party certification audits, providing hands-on support and strategic guidance to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Design and deliver engaging and effective training programs for client personnel on topics like GMPs, HACCP, PCQI, food defense, and allergen management.
  • Perform thorough investigations into food safety incidents, customer complaints, and non-conformances, utilizing root cause analysis methodologies to develop effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPAs).
  • Provide expert guidance during regulatory inspections (FDA, USDA, state/local health departments), acting as a liaison to ensure smooth and positive interactions.
  • Develop and optimize client documentation, including food safety manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and record-keeping systems for audit readiness and operational efficiency.
  • Guide clients in developing and implementing robust environmental monitoring programs (EMPs) for pathogens like Listeria and Salmonella.
  • Conduct mock recalls and traceability exercises to test and strengthen client crisis management and recall plans.
  • Advise on sanitary design principles for new construction, facility renovations, and equipment purchasing to mitigate food safety risks from the ground up.
  • Perform risk assessments for new ingredients, products, processes, and suppliers to ensure safety and compliance before market entry.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive supplier approval and verification programs, including conducting supplier and co-packer audits.
  • Assist clients in creating and implementing robust Food Defense and Food Fraud (vulnerability assessment) plans.
  • Provide strategic and tactical support during food safety crises, including regulatory actions, market withdrawals, and product recalls.
  • Review and provide technical feedback on product labeling to ensure compliance with nutritional and allergen labeling regulations.
  • Serve as an ongoing, on-call technical resource for clients, providing timely advice and solutions for day-to-day food safety challenges.

Secondary Functions

  • Contribute to business development efforts by identifying new service opportunities with existing and prospective clients.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GFSI Expertise: In-depth knowledge and practical implementation experience with one or more GFSI-benchmarked schemes (SQF, BRCGS, FSSC 22000).
  • Regulatory Mastery: Deep understanding of FDA and USDA regulations, particularly FSMA rules (Preventive Controls, FSVP, Sanitary Transport, Intentional Adulteration).
  • HACCP & PCQI Certification: Certified in HACCP and as a Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) is required.
  • Auditing Proficiency: Certified auditor (e.g., ASQ CQA, lead auditor for a GFSI scheme) with extensive experience conducting internal, supplier, and pre-assessment audits.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Skilled in utilizing various RCA methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, etc.) to investigate and resolve complex issues.
  • Food Microbiology: Strong working knowledge of foodborne pathogens, spoilage organisms, and the principles of sanitation and environmental monitoring.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to develop clear, concise, and accurate technical documents, including policies, procedures, and reports.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution.

Preferred Education:

  • Master's Degree (M.S.) in a relevant scientific discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 7-12+ years of progressive experience in food safety and quality assurance roles within a food manufacturing, distribution, or corporate environment.

Preferred:

  • At least 3 years of direct consulting experience is highly desirable.
  • Hands-on experience across multiple food product categories (e.g., RTE, produce, dairy, meat/poultry, baked goods).
  • Proven track record of leading a facility to successful, first-time GFSI certification.
  • Experience managing or directly responding to regulatory actions (e.g., FDA 483s, Warning Letters).
  • Additional certifications such as Certified in Comprehensive Food Safety (CCFS), Certified Food Scientist (CFS), or FSVP Qualified Individual are a strong plus.
