Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Engineer and create 2D and 3D footwear patterns from design sketches, technical drawings, and 3D models, ensuring the preservation of the original design intent.
  • Translate complex design concepts into technically sound and manufacturable patterns for various footwear constructions, including athletic, casual, and formal styles.
  • Grade patterns across a full-size range, ensuring consistent fit, proportion, and performance for all customers.
  • Collaborate intimately with the Design and Product Development teams to provide expert feedback on construction, material suitability, and feasibility during the initial concept phase.
  • Develop and manage the creation of comprehensive technical packages, including detailed pattern files, graded specifications, and construction guidelines for factory partners.
  • Conduct and lead fit-testing sessions, analyzing fit feedback and making critical adjustments to patterns to achieve optimal comfort, performance, and aesthetics.
  • Build, cut, and assemble initial prototypes and mock-ups to test and validate pattern accuracy, construction methods, and material behavior.
  • Drive the resolution of complex fit, quality, and construction issues that arise during the sampling and production stages, providing clear and actionable solutions.

  • Maintain and meticulously organize the digital and physical pattern library, ensuring all patterns are up-to-date and version-controlled.
  • Communicate technical pattern and construction details effectively with overseas and domestic manufacturing partners to ensure samples are executed correctly.
  • Evaluate and approve confirmation samples, comparing them against technical packages and patterns to guarantee accuracy before production approval.
  • Research and implement innovative pattern-making techniques, construction methods, and technologies to enhance product quality and efficiency.
  • Work with material sourcing teams to test new materials, providing feedback on their impact on pattern shape, stretch, and overall shoe construction.
  • Create detailed Bill of Materials (BOMs) for new models, specifying all components, materials, and consumption rates.
  • Advise on material cutting strategies and pattern nesting to optimize material yield and reduce manufacturing costs without compromising product integrity.
  • Perform tear-downs and analysis of competitor products to benchmark construction, fit, and pattern engineering.
  • Ensure all patterns and technical specifications adhere to brand standards, cost targets, and commercialization timelines.
  • Mentor junior pattern makers and developers, sharing knowledge of best practices in pattern engineering and footwear construction.
  • Manage the complete pattern lifecycle from initial concept creation through to final production hand-off (commercialization).
  • Create and refine last-bottom patterns and templates, ensuring a perfect connection between the upper, insole, midsole, and outsole.

  • Contribute to the organization's product development strategy by providing insights on new construction possibilities and manufacturing technologies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • 2D/3D CAD Software: Mastery of industry-standard footwear CAD software (e.g., Crispin, Shoemaster, Delcam, RomansCAD, Rhino).
  • Pattern Engineering: Deep expertise in creating, correcting, and grading footwear patterns for a variety of constructions.
  • Footwear Construction: Extensive knowledge of shoe construction methods, including strobel, board lasting, stitch-down, vulcanized, and cement construction.
  • Technical Specifications: Ability to create and interpret detailed technical packages, BOMs, and spec sheets.
  • Material Knowledge: Strong understanding of leathers, textiles, synthetics, and foams and how they behave during construction and wear.
  • Lasts and Fit: Proficient understanding of footwear lasts, human foot anatomy, and the biomechanics of fit.
  • Prototyping & Sample Making: Hands-on ability to cut, skive, and assemble shoe uppers and build initial prototypes.
  • Adobe Creative Suite: Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop for creating technical sketches and refining design details.
  • PLM Systems: Experience working with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software for managing product data.
  • Grading Expertise: Proven ability to accurately grade patterns for production across a full range of international sizing systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
