Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop and pitch original, high-impact story ideas, and react swiftly to breaking news events, providing immediate, accurate, and comprehensive coverage from the field.
  • Research, write, and produce compelling, accurate, and impartial news reports, features, and in-depth analyses across multiple platforms, including digital, print, and broadcast.
  • Cultivate and maintain a robust network of high-level contacts and sources, including government officials, business leaders, activists, and ordinary citizens, to ensure exclusive access and unique insights.
  • Travel extensively, often on short notice and to challenging or high-risk environments, to cover stories firsthand and provide authentic on-the-ground reporting.
  • Conceive, shoot, and edit high-quality video and audio content for digital and broadcast platforms, demonstrating strong multimedia storytelling skills to engage a global audience.
  • Rigorously fact-check all information, data, and quotes to uphold the highest standards of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and fairness in all reporting.
  • Collaborate effectively with editors, producers, photographers, and other journalists, both in the field and in the home newsroom, to develop and execute comprehensive coverage plans.
  • Deliver clear, confident, and authoritative live reports and two-ways for broadcast television and radio, often under tight deadlines and in high-pressure situations.
  • Utilize social media platforms to gather news, engage with audiences, promote stories, and provide real-time updates from the field, while adhering to company guidelines.
  • Develop a deep and nuanced understanding of the political, economic, social, and cultural landscape of the assigned region or country to provide rich context in all reporting.
  • Proactively identify and pitch original, enterprise story ideas that go beyond the daily headlines to provide unique perspectives and investigative reporting.
  • Manage all logistical aspects of field assignments, including travel arrangements, accreditations, and equipment transport, ensuring operational readiness at all times.
  • Adhere to strict security protocols and hostile environment training guidelines to ensure personal safety and the safety of the team while operating in conflict zones or other high-risk areas.
  • Produce insightful analysis and long-form feature articles that provide context and depth to complex international issues, helping audiences understand the "why" behind the news.
  • Identify, vet, and manage local fixers, translators, and drivers, building relationships of trust and ensuring their safety and fair treatment.
  • Act as a prominent ambassador for the news organization, upholding its values and journalistic standards in all public and private interactions.
  • Manage assignment budgets effectively, tracking expenses and ensuring cost-efficient operations without compromising the quality or safety of the journalism.
  • Stay abreast of and adeptly use new technologies and digital tools for newsgathering, production, and distribution to enhance storytelling and reach.
  • Adapt writing style and content format for various platforms, from quick digital updates and social media posts to long-form investigative pieces and broadcast scripts.
  • Maintain a consistent and high-quality flow of news, features, and analysis from the assigned bureau to meet the demands of a 24/7 news cycle.
  • Respond constructively to editorial feedback and guidance, working collaboratively with editors to refine and improve stories before publication or broadcast.
  • Closely monitor local and regional media, social media trends, and official statements to stay ahead of developing stories and identify key emerging narratives.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor junior journalists, local stringers, or freelance contributors, providing guidance on journalistic standards and practices.
  • Contribute to internal strategy discussions regarding regional coverage priorities, resource allocation, and long-term editorial planning.
  • Represent the organization by participating in panels, industry conferences, or university lectures to share expertise on the region and the profession.
  • Provide regular security assessments and logistical feedback from the field to the foreign desk to help improve safety protocols for all staff.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Foreign Language Proficiency: Professional working proficiency or fluency in at least one language relevant to a major international region (e.g., Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish, Russian, French).
  • Multimedia Production: Demonstrated ability to self-shoot and edit broadcast-quality video and audio for multiple platforms.
  • Broadcast Performance: Exceptional on-air presence with the ability to deliver clear, concise, and compelling live and pre-recorded reports.
  • Digital & Social Media Savvy: Expertise in using social media for newsgathering and audience engagement, as well as proficiency with digital content management systems (CMS).
  • Investigative Techniques: Knowledge of data journalism, public records requests (FOIA), and other investigative methods to uncover original stories.
  • Hostile Environment Training: Certification or significant experience in Hostile Environment and First Aid Training (HEFAT) is strongly preferred.

Experience Requirements

Prior international reporting assignments or extensive time spent living and working abroad is highly desirable. Experience reporting from conflict zones or other challenging environments is a significant asset.
