Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive serological and microscopic examinations to locate and identify biological materials such as blood, semen, and saliva on physical evidence.
  • Execute complex DNA analysis procedures, including differential extraction, quantitation using real-time PCR, amplification via polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and short tandem repeat (STR) typing.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instrumentation, including genetic analyzers (Capillary Electrophoresis), robotic liquid handlers, and thermal cyclers.
  • Interpret and analyze complex DNA data using specialized software (e.g., GeneMapper ID-X), including the statistical evaluation of single-source and complex mixture profiles.
  • Prepare, review, and issue detailed, comprehensive, and impartial laboratory reports documenting analytical procedures, results, and conclusions in accordance with laboratory protocols and accreditation standards.
  • Testify in depositions, pre-trial hearings, and court proceedings as an expert witness, clearly and effectively communicating scientific principles, analytical methods, and the significance of results to a lay audience.
  • Maintain and meticulously document the chain of custody for all evidence items to ensure their integrity throughout the analytical process.
  • Conduct technical and administrative reviews of casework performed by other analysts to ensure accuracy, compliance with standard operating procedures, and scientific validity.
  • Upload and search eligible DNA profiles in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS) and manage any resulting associations in compliance with national and state guidelines.
  • Participate in and successfully complete regular internal and external proficiency tests to demonstrate and maintain technical competence.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the validation of new analytical methods, instrumentation, and software to enhance laboratory capabilities and efficiency.
  • Author and revise standard operating procedures (SOPs), training manuals, and quality control documents.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior analysts, technicians, and interns on laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and casework strategy.
  • Manage laboratory supply inventory, prepare chemical reagents, and ensure proper disposal of biological and chemical waste.
  • Respond to crime scenes, when required, to provide guidance on the identification, collection, and preservation of biological evidence.
  • Liaise with law enforcement officers, attorneys, and other stakeholders to provide consultations on evidence submission and the interpretation of forensic biology reports.
  • Stay current with advancements in the field of forensic DNA analysis by reviewing scientific literature, attending workshops, and participating in professional organizations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues with laboratory equipment and analytical processes, documenting all corrective actions taken.
  • Perform statistical calculations and utilize probabilistic genotyping software (e.g., STRmixâ„¢, TrueAlleleâ„¢) for the interpretation of complex DNA mixtures.
  • Ensure all work is performed in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 and FBI Quality Assurance Standards (QAS) for Forensic DNA Testing Laboratories.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an accredited university in Biology, Chemistry, Forensic Science, or a closely related natural science field. Must have successfully completed coursework in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry, as required by the FBI's Quality Assurance Standards (QAS).

Preferred Education:

A Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Forensic Science, Biology, or a related field with a thesis or research project in forensic DNA analysis.
