Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Systematically examine and document items of physical evidence to locate, identify, and collect potential biological stains for further analysis.
  • Perform a comprehensive range of serological screening tests, including presumptive and confirmatory assays, to definitively identify biological fluids such as blood, semen, and saliva.
  • Execute complex DNA extraction protocols on a wide variety of evidence types, including degraded or low-quantity samples, to isolate high-quality genetic material.
  • Accurately quantify the amount of human DNA present in evidentiary samples using Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) to determine the optimal strategy for downstream analysis.
  • Amplify specific Short Tandem Repeat (STR) regions of nuclear and Y-STR DNA using established Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques and validated commercial kits.
  • Prepare amplified DNA products for analysis and operate sophisticated genetic analyzer instrumentation, such as Capillary Electrophoresis platforms, to generate DNA profiles.
  • Conduct in-depth analysis and interpretation of DNA typing results, including the deconvolution of complex DNA mixtures from multiple contributors, using advanced probabilistic genotyping software (e.g., STRmixâ„¢).
  • Compare evidentiary DNA profiles with profiles from known individuals (victims, suspects) and search against national and local DNA databases (CODIS) to generate investigative leads.
  • Prepare comprehensive, detailed, and impartial technical reports that clearly summarize laboratory procedures, analytical findings, statistical calculations, and expert conclusions in a manner understandable to a lay audience.
  • Provide clear, concise, and effective expert witness testimony in depositions, pre-trial hearings, and court proceedings regarding laboratory methods, scientific results, and the significance of DNA evidence.
  • Meticulously maintain and document the chain-of-custody for all handled evidence, ensuring its integrity from receipt through final disposition in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Perform and document routine quality control checks, maintenance, and calibration on all laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure operational readiness and data accuracy.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct technical and administrative peer reviews of fellow analysts' casework, reports, and data to ensure scientific accuracy, quality, and adherence to standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in the validation of new laboratory methods, instrumentation, and software to enhance the laboratory's analytical capabilities and maintain a state-of-the-art workflow.
  • Successfully complete annual internal and external proficiency tests to demonstrate and maintain technical competence and fulfill accreditation requirements.

  • Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols and quality assurance standards as defined by accrediting bodies such as ANAB (ANSI National Accreditation Board) or ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Manage laboratory reagent and consumable inventories, anticipate future needs, and prepare orders to prevent disruptions in casework operations.
  • Stay current with the latest scientific advancements, publications, and emerging technologies in the field of forensic serology and DNA analysis through continuing education.
  • Provide expert consultation to detectives, investigators, and attorneys regarding the potential and limitations of DNA evidence in specific criminal cases.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A Master's degree in Forensic Science, Biology, or a closely related field.
