Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Provide comprehensive, patient-centered, and trauma-informed medical care to pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients who have experienced violence, assault, or abuse.
Conduct detailed medical-forensic examinations on individuals who have experienced trauma, including sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and neglect.
Meticulously collect, document, and preserve all forms of forensic evidence, including biological samples and physical trace evidence, while maintaining a strict and legally defensible chain of custody.
Perform in-depth patient history interviews, focusing on the details of the traumatic event in a sensitive, non-leading, and non-judgmental manner.
Conduct a thorough head-to-toe physical assessment for trauma, documenting all findings with precise anatomical terminology, body maps, and diagrams.
Utilize specialized forensic photography equipment to capture high-quality, objective images of injuries and evidence, ensuring proper documentation and admissibility in court.
Administer prophylactic medications for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and provide options for emergency contraception according to established clinical protocols.
Deliver immediate crisis intervention and psychological first aid to patients and their families, connecting them with appropriate counseling and social support resources.
Offer expert testimony in legal proceedings, including depositions, hearings, and court trials, clearly articulating the findings of the medical-forensic examination.
Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team including law enforcement, attorneys, child protective services, and social service agencies to ensure a coordinated community response.
Maintain highly detailed, timely, and accurate patient records and forensic documentation that are objective and can withstand the scrutiny of the legal system.
Educate patients on their medical and legal options, safety planning, follow-up care, and available community resources to empower them in their recovery.
Assess and manage a patient's immediate psychological and physiological responses to trauma, including acute stress reactions and post-traumatic stress symptoms.
Provide objective and articulate deposition and courtroom testimony as a fact or expert witness, clearly explaining complex medical and forensic findings to a judge or jury.
Maintain a constant state of readiness to respond to calls for forensic examinations, often as part of a scheduled on-call rotation system covering nights, weekends, and holidays.
Screen patients to determine the need for acute or higher-level medical treatment and facilitate patient stabilization or transfer as necessary.

Secondary Functions

Participate in multidisciplinary case review meetings and internal peer review processes to ensure the highest quality of care and promote continuous practice improvement.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Forensic Certification: Active SANE-A (Adolescent/Adult) and/or SANE-P (Pediatric) certification is strongly preferred.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements
