Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Meticulously assist the Forensic Pathologist in all phases of the medicolegal autopsy, including the external and internal examinations of the body.
Perform precise and systematic evisceration of human organs and tissues according to established protocols or as directed by the pathologist.
Accurately weigh, measure, and prepare organs for detailed examination, dissection, and specimen collection by the pathologist.
Skillfully suture and prepare the decedent’s remains post-autopsy, ensuring a respectful and dignified presentation for release to funeral homes.
Execute complex autopsy procedures requiring specialized knowledge, such as spinal cord removal, extremity dissections, and layer-by-layer neck dissections.
Capture high-quality, detailed forensic photographs of evidence, injuries, and identifying features before, during, and after the examination.
Aseptically collect, label, and document a wide range of biological specimens, including blood, urine, bile, vitreous fluid, and tissue samples for toxicological, histological, and microbiological analysis.
Maintain an unbroken and meticulously documented chain of custody for all physical evidence, biological samples, and personal property associated with a case.
Perform full-body forensic radiography (X-rays) to identify projectiles, fractures, and foreign objects, processing images for pathologist review.
Secure and process trace evidence found on the body, such as hair, fibers, or gunshot residue, in coordination with the pathologist and law enforcement.
Admit and release decedents from the morgue, verifying identities through visual confirmation, tags, and official documentation to prevent any misidentification.
Obtain clear and complete postmortem fingerprints, palm prints, and footprints from decedents for identification purposes.
Prepare and maintain detailed case files, logs, and electronic records, ensuring all autopsy-related activities and collected evidence are thoroughly documented.
Set up the autopsy suite with all necessary instruments, supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring a safe and efficient working environment.
Operate and maintain sophisticated autopsy equipment, including bone saws, scales, X-ray machines, and laboratory instruments, ensuring they are clean and functional.
Clean and decontaminate the autopsy suite, instruments, and equipment after each procedure, adhering to strict biohazard and infection control standards.
Prepare chemical solutions and fixatives, such as formalin, for the proper preservation of tissue specimens destined for histopathology.
Assist in the identification of unknown decedents by documenting tattoos, scars, dental characteristics, and other unique features.
Ensure the morgue and associated facilities are kept in a clean, orderly, and secure condition at all times, conducting regular inventory of supplies.
Interact professionally and compassionately with law enforcement, funeral directors, and other official personnel involved in the investigation and disposition of cases.

Secondary Functions

Manage and maintain a comprehensive inventory of laboratory supplies, personal protective equipment (PPE), and autopsy instruments, initiating orders to prevent shortages.
Liaise with law enforcement agencies, organ procurement organizations, and funeral home personnel to coordinate the release of remains and exchange of pertinent information.
Assist in training new technicians, students, or visiting observers on morgue safety, procedures, and protocols.
Participate in quality assurance and quality control programs to ensure the laboratory meets accreditation standards from organizations like NAME or CAP.

A Bachelor's Degree in Forensic Science, Biology, Chemistry, or a closely related natural science field is highly preferred and often required for advancement.

Experience Requirements
