Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive forest inventories and timber cruises to collect critical data on timber volume, species composition, tree quality, and site characteristics.
  • Utilize a variety of forestry tools, including prisms, clinometers, diameter tapes, and increment borers, to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Employ GPS devices and mobile data recorders for precise navigation and efficient collection of geospatial field data.
  • Assist in the layout and marking of timber sale boundaries, property lines, and riparian management zones according to management plans and environmental regulations.
  • Select and mark individual trees for commercial thinning, regeneration harvests, and other silvicultural treatments based on specific prescriptions.
  • Perform regeneration surveys and stocking plots to assess the success of reforestation efforts and determine the need for subsequent treatments.
  • Participate in post-harvest activities, including site preparation, tree planting, and vegetation control to ensure successful forest regeneration.
  • Monitor active harvesting, road construction, and site preparation operations to ensure compliance with contract specifications, safety protocols, and Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  • Assist in the maintenance of forest infrastructure, including identifying culvert and road repair needs and performing boundary line painting and posting.
  • Collect field data for forest health monitoring, identifying and reporting on the presence formatos of insect infestations, diseases, and invasive species.
  • Assist with the implementation of prescribed burning plans by participating in fireline construction, fuel assessment, and post-burn monitoring.
  • Utilize GIS software (such as ArcGIS or QGIS) to create maps, manage spatial data, and perform basic analysis बजट in support of forest operations.
  • Operate 4x4 trucks and potentially ATVs/UTVs safely on forest roads and off-road conditions to access remote work sites.
  • Compile, enter, and quality-check field data into forestry databases and software systems fatores for analysis and reporting.
  • Assist in the administration of timber sales, including log scaling, tracking load tickets, and communicating with logging contractors.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist senior foresters with ad-hoc data requests, map creation, and exploratory field analysis to support strategic planning.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of field data collection protocols and safety procedures by providing feedback from on-the-ground experience.
  • Collaborate with wildlife biologists and other specialists on integrated resource management projects, such as habitat assessments or stream surveys.
  • Participate in team meetings, safety briefings, and planning sessions, contributing a fresh perspective to our operational strategy.
  • Support the preparation of technical reports, management plans, and operational summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Help maintain and calibrate field equipment to ensure operational readiness and data accuracy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Forest Mensuration & Inventory: Proficient in common timber cruising methods and the use of tools like a prism, relaskop, DBH tape, and clinometer.
  • Tree & Plant Identification: Strong ability to identify common commercial tree species, as well as key understory plants and invasive species native to the region.
  • GIS/GPS Technology: Experience using GPS units for navigation and data collection, and basic proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS Pro, ArcMap, Avenza Maps) for viewing and editing data.
  • Vehicle Operation: Ability to safely operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle on rough, unpaved forest roads and in variable weather conditions.
  • Data Management: Competency in using Microsoft Excel or similar spreadsheet software for data entry, organization, and basic calculations.
  • Understanding of Silviculture: Foundational knowledge of silvicultural systems, forest ecology, and an understanding of how management activities impact forest development.
  • Map Reading & Navigation: Skilled in interpreting topographic maps, aerial imagery, and digital maps to navigate effectively in remote forest settings.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Currently enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program.

Preferred Education:

Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor of Science degree from a Society of American Foresters (SAF) accredited forestry program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

0-1 years of relevant experience. Academic coursework, field labs, and a demonstrable passion for the outdoors are highly valued.

Preferred:

  • Completion of a university-sponsored forestry summer field camp.
  • Previous seasonal work or internship experience in forestry, wildland firefighting, or a related natural resources field.
  • Documented experience operating ATVs, tractors, or other outdoor equipment.
