Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate specialized heavy machinery, including but not limited to Feller Bunchers, Harvesters, Processors, Skidders, and Forwarders, to fell, delimb, cut-to-length, and transport timber.
  • Execute harvesting plans with precision, using GPS and digital maps to navigate cutting boundaries, property lines, and environmentally sensitive zones.
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections on equipment, meticulously checking fluid levels, hydraulic systems, tracks/tires, and safety features to ensure operational readiness.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance and minor field repairs, such as lubricating fittings, replacing saw teeth, sharpening chains, and fixing hydraulic hoses to minimize downtime.
  • Maneuver heavy equipment safely and efficiently across diverse and often challenging terrain, including steep slopes, soft ground, and dense forest conditions.
  • Optimize cutting, processing, and loading techniques to maximize timber value and yield, ensuring logs meet specific mill quality, species, and length specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment within the machine cab and on the job site, adhering to all housekeeping and safety standards.
  • Monitor machine performance and onboard diagnostic systems, promptly identifying and reporting any mechanical failures or irregularities to the maintenance team.
  • Ensure all harvesting activities strictly comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations, company policies, and sustainable forestry best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed daily operational records, including hours worked, production volumes, fuel consumption, and any equipment downtime or repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with other operators, log truck drivers, and site supervisors using a two-way radio to coordinate a safe and seamless workflow from stump to truck.
  • Assess stand conditions, tree size, and potential hazards in real-time to adjust operating techniques for enhanced safety and productivity.
  • Troubleshoot basic mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues in the field to identify problems and implement immediate solutions when possible.
  • Uphold a constant state of situational awareness to identify and mitigate risks to personnel, equipment, and the surrounding environment.
  • Assist in the strategic placement and construction of logging roads and landings to facilitate efficient and safe operational flow.
  • Operate equipment with a focus on minimizing ground disturbance, soil compaction, and damage to residual trees and regeneration.
  • Participate actively in daily "tailgate" safety meetings, contributing to a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
  • Manage the efficient use of fuel, lubricants, and other consumables to help control operational costs.
  • Utilize onboard computer and telematics systems to track productivity, monitor machine health, and optimize cutting patterns.
  • Clear debris and prepare harvest sites, ensuring they are left in a condition that meets contractual and environmental requirements post-operation.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance team with more extensive scheduled repairs and overhauls during seasonal shutdowns or maintenance days.
  • Provide mentorship and on-the-job guidance to new or less-experienced equipment operators.
  • Contribute to site safety audits and provide practical feedback for enhancing operational safety procedures.
  • Participate in pre-harvest planning meetings to offer an operator's perspective on terrain, accessibility, and potential challenges.
