Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly oversee and coordinate all field-level forestry operations, including timber harvesting, road construction and maintenance, and log transportation logistics.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive silvicultural plans, encompassing site preparation, planting, vegetation management, and pre-commercial thinning to meet long-term stand objectives.
  • Champion a world-class safety culture by conducting regular site inspections, leading safety meetings, and ensuring all personnel and contractors strictly adhere to company and OSHA safety standards.
  • Administer and manage contracts with logging, trucking, and silviculture contractors, ensuring full compliance with contractual terms, environmental regulations, and quality specifications.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the performance of a team of foresters, technicians, and seasonal employees, providing constructive guidance and professional development opportunities.
  • Manage operational budgets for harvesting and silviculture projects, meticulously tracking expenditures, forecasting costs, and ensuring activities are completed within financial constraints.
  • Ensure all forestry activities comply with federal, state, and local environmental laws, as well as Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) or Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification standards.
  • Conduct detailed forest inventory and timber cruising to accurately estimate the volume, quality, and value of timber stands designated for harvest.
  • Coordinate with procurement and sales teams to ensure a consistent and high-quality supply of logs to mills, meeting all sorting and delivery specifications.
  • Utilize GIS, GPS, and other advanced forest management software to effectively plan operations, map stand boundaries, track activities, and generate insightful reports.
  • Serve as the primary on-site point of contact for resolving complex operational issues, contractor disputes, and unforeseen field challenges in a timely and effective manner.
  • Plan and execute prescribed burning programs for site preparation and ecological habitat management, including the development of burn plans and coordination with fire agencies.
  • Implement and rigorously monitor Best Management Practices (BMPs) for water quality protection during all phases of roading, harvesting, and site preparation.
  • Prepare and present detailed operational reports, progress updates, and post-harvest analyses to senior management and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage the security of forest assets, including land, timber, and equipment, by actively monitoring for trespass, timber theft, and vandalism.
  • Engage proactively with adjacent landowners, government agencies, and the public to communicate operational plans and professionally address any concerns regarding forestry activities.
  • Lead initial attack and support efforts on wildfire suppression, effectively coordinating resources and ensuring the safety of all personnel involved.
  • Continuously evaluate new technologies, equipment, and methodologies to drive improvements in operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Maintain meticulous and audit-ready records of all forestry activities, including chemical applications, planting densities, harvest volumes, and compliance inspections.
  • Develop and manage the construction and maintenance schedule for the forest road network to ensure safe and efficient all-weather access for operational and recreational needs.
  • Perform rigorous quality control checks on all contractor work, from planting survival rates to log sorting accuracy, to ensure strict adherence to company standards.
  • Coordinate aerial operations, such as herbicide or fertilizer application, ensuring full compliance with all regulations and achievement of effective treatment results.

Secondary Functions

  • Support public outreach initiatives and educational tours to promote the benefits of sustainable forest management.
  • Participate in regional planning meetings with industry peers and government agencies to discuss long-term resource strategies.
  • Conduct informal wildlife habitat assessments and report observations to support broader ecological monitoring programs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Forest Operations Management: In-depth knowledge of ground-based and cable harvesting systems, road construction/engineering principles, and a full suite of silvicultural treatments.
  • Contract Administration: Strong experience in preparing, negotiating, and administering performance-based contracts for logging, hauling, and forestry services.
  • GIS & Forest Technology: Proficiency in using GIS software (ArcGIS/QGIS), mobile GPS units, and specialized forest inventory software for planning, data collection, and analysis.
  • Timber Cruising & Valuation: Competency in various timber cruising methods, statistical sampling, and log grading to accurately assess timber volume and economic value.
  • Regulatory & Environmental Compliance: Thorough knowledge of federal/state environmental laws (e.g., Clean Water Act), Best Management Practices (BMPs), and sustainable forestry certification standards (SFI/FSC).
  • Wildfire Management: Certification or verifiable experience in wildfire behavior, prevention, and suppression tactics (e.g., S-130/S-190 certification).

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an SAF-accredited forestry program or a closely related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master of Science (M.S.) in Forestry or Forest Operations.
  • Professional certification such as a Certified Forester (CF) or state-level registration.
