Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and execute complex blueprints, engineering drawings, and specifications to accurately determine formwork requirements for foundations, walls, columns, and slabs.
- Measure, mark, cut, and shape lumber, plywood, and other forming materials with high precision using a variety of hand and power tools, including saws, drills, and grinders.
- Construct, erect, and install a wide range of formwork systems, including traditional timber, gang forms, and proprietary systems like Peri, Doka, or Symons.
- Precisely position, align, and secure formwork for various concrete structures such as footings, foundations, walls, columns, beams, and suspended slabs.
- Install and verify the stability of shoring, bracing, and re-shoring systems to ensure the structural integrity of forms during concrete placement and curing phases.
- Accurately incorporate block-outs, openings, embeds, anchor bolts, and sleeves into the formwork as specified in the project plans.
- Collaborate closely with reinforcing ironworkers (rebar setters) to ensure proper placement and code-required clearance of steel reinforcement within the forms.
- Meticulously inspect and prepare forms prior to concrete pours, ensuring they are clean, properly oiled, and sealed to prevent leakage and ensure a quality finish.
- Actively monitor the concrete pour to identify and address any potential formwork issues, such as bulging, shifting, or leaks, in real-time.
- Systematically dismantle, strip, clean, and prepare formwork panels and components for reuse on subsequent pours, maximizing material efficiency and minimizing waste.
- Perform detailed layout work, including establishing lines, grades, and elevations using levels, transits, laser alignment tools, and chalk lines.
- Adhere strictly to all site-specific and OSHA safety regulations, including fall protection, tool safety, and personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols at all times.
- Construct various temporary structures on the job site, such as safety railings, access ramps, work platforms, and temporary shelters as directed.
- Operate machinery like forklifts or boom lifts for the efficient movement and positioning of large formwork components (certification may be required).
- Check the vertical (plumb) and horizontal (level) alignment of all formwork structures, making necessary adjustments to ensure they meet strict dimensional tolerances.
- Communicate effectively with foremen, superintendents, and other trades to coordinate workflow, schedule tasks, and resolve on-site challenges proactively.
- Fabricate custom or specialized forms for unique architectural features, curves, arches, and other complex geometries as required by the design.
- Perform basic rigging and signaling to guide crane operators during the lifting, flying, and placement of large gang forms and materials.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area to prevent accidents, reduce hazards, and improve overall site productivity.
- Conduct quality control checks on finished concrete work after form removal to ensure it meets the desired finish and dimensional accuracy.
- Brace and support formwork adequately to withstand the hydrostatic pressure of freshly poured concrete, preventing blowouts and ensuring structural safety.
- Assemble and dismantle scaffolding, work platforms, and other temporary access structures required to perform formwork activities at various elevations.
Secondary Functions
- Assist general laborers and other trades with various site tasks during downtime to ensure project continuity.
- Mentor and provide on-the-job training and guidance to apprentice carpenters and less experienced team members.
