Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Skillfully operate material handling equipment, including forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks, to move, stage, and position freight for loading and unloading.
- Methodically load outbound trailers according to prescribed loading plans, ensuring optimal weight distribution, space utilization, and compliance with transportation regulations.
- Systematically unload inbound freight from trailers, sorting and segregating items based on destination, product type, and handling requirements.
- Inspect inbound and outbound shipments for any signs of damage, overages, or shortages, and accurately document and report any discrepancies to the dock supervisor.
- Expertly secure cargo within trailers using load bars, straps, and dunnage to prevent shifting, falling, and damage during transit.
- Read, interpret, and verify shipping documents, including bills of lading (BOL), manifests, and freight bills, to ensure the accuracy of loaded and unloaded goods.
- Utilize handheld RF (Radio Frequency) scanners to track freight movement, update inventory systems, and confirm the contents of each shipment.
- Ensure all freight is correctly labeled, marked, and staged in the designated areas of the dock for efficient cross-docking or warehousing.
- Manually lift, carry, and stack freight of varying weights and sizes, often repetitively, while adhering to safe lifting practices.
- Accurately weigh and measure freight (cubing) to determine correct shipping charges and ensure compliance with carrier specifications.
- Maintain a consistent and high level of productivity to meet strict departure schedules and operational key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Collaborate effectively with truck drivers to guide them into and out of dock bays and communicate loading/unloading status.
- Perform freight staging by organizing and consolidating shipments destined for similar routes or locations to streamline the loading process.
- Wrap and re-palletize freight as necessary to ensure stability and safety for handling and transport.
- Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Conduct visual inspections of trailers before loading to ensure they are clean, free of debris, and structurally sound for transport.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with team members, leads, and supervisors regarding freight status, potential issues, and workflow.
- Handle hazardous materials according to specific protocols and regulations, ensuring proper placarding, segregation, and documentation.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area on the loading dock and within the warehouse to prevent accidents and improve efficiency.
- Assist in other areas of the warehouse or dock as needed, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to overall team success.
Secondary Functions
- Perform routine pre-shift and post-shift inspections on material handling equipment, reporting any malfunctions or safety concerns immediately.
- Participate in regular safety meetings and training sessions to stay current on best practices and company policies.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a warehouse, logistics, or shipping/receiving environment.
