Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and efficiently operate Class A commercial vehicles, primarily tractor-trailers, over long-distance (OTR), regional, or local routes to transport various types of freight.
  • Meticulously perform and document pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections on all equipment as mandated by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to ensure vehicle roadworthiness.
  • Manage the secure loading, proper weight distribution, and safe unloading of cargo, verifying freight against shipping documents to prevent damage, shortage, or overage.
  • Accurately maintain and complete all legally required documentation, including driver logs via Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), trip reports, fuel receipts, and bills of lading (BOLs).
  • Maintain strict adherence to all federal, state, and local traffic laws, as well as DOT and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations, particularly concerning hours-of-service (HOS).
  • Plan and execute travel routes using GPS, maps, and other navigational tools to ensure timely deliveries while optimizing for fuel efficiency and safety.
  • Provide clear, professional, and timely communication with dispatch, fleet managers, shippers, and receivers regarding trip status, estimated arrival times, potential delays, and any on-the-road issues.
  • Uphold the cleanliness and operational readiness of the assigned vehicle, promptly reporting any mechanical issues, maintenance needs, or damages to the maintenance department.
  • Expertly handle all freight-related paperwork, obtaining necessary signatures upon delivery and ensuring all documents are correctly processed and submitted.
  • Skillfully maneuver trucks into tight loading docks, delivery bays, and challenging urban environments, demonstrating superior backing and spatial awareness skills.
  • Monitor vehicle performance indicators, including fuel consumption, tire pressure, and engine diagnostics, to ensure operational efficiency and preventative maintenance.
  • Securely fasten cargo for transport using chains, binders, straps, tarps, and other securement devices in full compliance with federal cargo security regulations.
  • Comply with all company policies, safety protocols, and standard operating procedures, acting as a brand ambassador and promoting a positive company image.
  • Operate and troubleshoot on-board technology with proficiency, including ELDs, satellite communication systems, and company-specific mobile applications.
  • Conduct thorough inspections of cargo to verify counts, check for damage, and ensure seals are intact, maintaining freight integrity from origin to destination.
  • Navigate and comply with procedures at weigh stations and ports of entry to ensure legal compliance with vehicle weight and cargo regulations.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service during every interaction at pickup and delivery locations, representing the company with professionalism and courtesy.
  • Adapt to dynamic operating conditions, including adverse weather, heavy traffic, and last-minute schedule changes, while maintaining a high level of on-time performance.
  • Report all accidents, incidents, traffic violations, or safety concerns immediately to the safety department in accordance with established company protocols.
  • Effectively manage personal time and driving schedules to meet multiple pickup and delivery appointments throughout the work week while complying with HOS rules.
  • Execute drop-and-hook operations or supervise live load/unload processes, ensuring efficiency and minimizing vehicle downtime at customer facilities.
  • Verify and collect all necessary delivery instructions, accessorial charges, and payment information as required by the specific load assignment.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc requests from dispatch or fleet management, such as route diversions, special customer instructions, or equipment repositioning.
  • Actively contribute to the company's safety culture by participating in safety meetings, completing recurrent training, and providing feedback on operational procedures.
  • Collaborate effectively with dock workers, warehouse staff, and other logistics personnel to ensure a smooth, safe, and efficient loading and unloading process.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and training sessions related to new safety regulations, compliance standards, and advanced vehicle technologies.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record. (Hazmat, Tanker, or Doubles/Triples endorsements are a significant plus).
  • Proficiency in Operating Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) and a comprehensive understanding of Hours-of-Service (HOS) regulations.
  • Thorough Knowledge of DOT and FMCSA Regulations governing commercial vehicle operation, safety, and compliance.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
