Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, manage, and oversee all daily operations of the Frozen Food department, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and merchandising.
  • Drive department sales and profitability by monitoring financial reports (sales, margin, labor) and implementing effective strategies to achieve performance goals.
  • Manage department inventory levels to ensure optimal in-stock position, prevent out-of-stocks, and minimize excess product, using ordering systems and sales data for forecasting.
  • Lead, train, and develop a team of Frozen Food associates, managing scheduling, delegating tasks, providing performance feedback, and fostering a positive and productive work culture.
  • Guarantee the department's adherence to all food safety regulations, sanitation guidelines, and company policies, including rigorous temperature monitoring and documentation.
  • Implement creative and effective merchandising strategies, including the planning and construction of promotional displays, to drive sales and enhance the customer experience.
  • Control department expenses, particularly labor and shrink (product loss), through efficient scheduling, proper product handling, and accurate inventory management.
  • Ensure proper product rotation using the First-In, First-Out (FIFO) method during stocking to maintain product quality and minimize spoilage.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by proactively assisting shoppers, sharing product knowledge, and resolving customer inquiries and concerns with professionalism.
  • Conduct regular department walks to assess conditions, identify opportunities, and ensure the sales floor and backroom are clean, organized, and safe.
  • Manage vendor relationships to ensure the timely and accurate delivery of quality products, and address any discrepancies or supply chain issues.
  • Interview, hire, and onboard new department associates, ensuring they receive comprehensive training on all operational procedures, safety protocols, and customer service standards.
  • Maintain pricing integrity by ensuring all products are accurately priced and signed, conducting regular price verification checks and updates.
  • Stay informed about market trends, new frozen food products, and competitor activities to identify opportunities for growth and innovation.
  • Lead the department team in achieving key performance indicators (KPIs), including sales targets, gross profit, and customer satisfaction scores.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in store-wide physical inventory counts and special projects as directed by store management.
  • Participate in store-level leadership meetings to discuss overall store performance and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Collaborate with other department managers (e.g., Dairy, Produce, Meat) to coordinate cross-promotions and ensure a cohesive customer shopping experience.
  • Engage in continuous improvement initiatives, providing feedback on operational processes, inventory systems, and store layout to enhance efficiency.
  • Address and resolve employee relations issues within the department, partnering with the Store Manager and Human Resources as needed.
  • Ensure all department equipment, including freezers, coolers, and pallet jacks, is functioning safely and properly, coordinating maintenance and repairs.

  • Inventory Management: Proficiency with electronic ordering systems, inventory control software, and forecasting techniques.
  • Financial Acumen: Ability to read, understand, and act upon financial statements like P&L reports to manage sales, margin, and labor.
  • Food Safety Knowledge: Strong understanding of food safety protocols, including HACCP, temperature danger zones, and proper handling procedures (ServSafe certification is a strong plus).
  • Merchandising Expertise: Proven skill in creating visually appealing product displays, executing planograms, and strategic product placement to drive sales.
  • Vendor Management: Experience in communicating with suppliers, placing orders, and resolving delivery or quality issues.
  • Workforce Management: Competency in creating employee schedules, managing payroll, and using labor management software to optimize coverage and cost.
