Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct thorough inspections of all inbound and outbound fresh fruit shipments, verifying against purchase orders and specification sheets.
- Evaluate produce for attributes such as size, shape, color, weight, firmness, and maturity according to USDA and company-specific grading standards.
- Skillfully identify and document product defects, including bruising, decay, mold, insect damage, and other blemishes.
- Operate and maintain specialized quality testing equipment, such as refractometers (for brix/sugar levels), penetrometers (for firmness), and sizing rings.
- Prepare detailed and accurate inspection reports, complete with photographs and data, and disseminate findings to procurement, sales, and warehouse teams.
- Authorize the acceptance or rejection of fruit lots based on inspection results and established quality tolerance levels.
- Monitor and record temperature and storage conditions within coolers and warehouses to ensure optimal product preservation and shelf life.
- Collect and prepare representative product samples for laboratory analysis, including testing for pesticides and microbial contaminants.
- Ensure all product packaging and labeling is accurate, secure, and compliant with regulatory and customer requirements.
- Communicate directly and professionally with suppliers and growers to provide constructive feedback on product quality and drive continuous improvement.
- Enforce and adhere to all food safety protocols, including HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices).
- Calibrate inspection tools and equipment regularly to ensure consistent and accurate measurements.
- Perform random quality audits on the production and packing lines to ensure standards are maintained throughout the process.
- Assist in training new inspectors and warehouse staff on fruit quality standards and inspection procedures.
- Manage the "hold" and "release" process for products, coordinating with inventory and logistics to ensure proper segregation of non-conforming goods.
- Investigate and document customer complaints related to fruit quality, contributing to root cause analysis and corrective action plans.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to all facility safety and sanitation policies.
- Assess ripeness levels to support conditioning programs and ensure fruit is ready for market according to customer timelines.
- Generate and issue official Certificates of Analysis (COA) or Quality Inspection Certificates as required for shipments.
- Stay current with evolving USDA regulations, industry best practices, and new inspection technologies for fresh produce.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a quality control, assurance, or inspection role, preferably within the fresh produce, food manufacturing, or agricultural industry.
Preferred: Direct experience as a Produce Inspector or Grader. Current certification as a USDA inspector is a significant advantage. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is a strong plus.
