Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Skillfully and efficiently harvest a variety of fruits, such as apples, berries, citrus, cherries, or grapes, adhering to specific grower and quality standards.
  • Conduct thorough visual inspections of fruit to assess ripeness, size, color, and identify any signs of damage, disease, or pests prior to picking.
  • Utilize specialized hand tools, including shears, clippers, and picking knives, with precision to detach fruit without damaging the produce or the parent plant.
  • Safely and confidently operate and reposition ladders, mobile platforms, or picking stools to access fruit on all parts of a tree or vine.
  • Gently place harvested fruit into designated picking buckets, bags, or field containers to minimize bruising and maintain market quality.
  • Consistently meet or exceed daily and weekly picking quotas while upholding stringent quality control throughout the harvesting process.
  • Sort and grade fruit directly in the field according to established criteria for size, color, and blemish-free appearance.
  • Physically lift and carry full containers of fruit, which may weigh up to 50 lbs, from the picking location to central collection points or transport vehicles.
  • Strictly adhere to all company and industry food safety, sanitation (GAP - Good Agricultural Practices), and personal hygiene protocols.
  • Perform duties effectively across a range of environmental and weather conditions, including sun, heat, cold, and light rain.
  • Differentiate between various fruit cultivars and apply the specific, nuanced harvesting techniques required for each type.
  • Maintain clear and consistent communication with Crew Leaders and Farm Supervisors regarding crop conditions, harvest progress, and any safety concerns.
  • Handle delicate fruit varieties with a soft touch to prevent bruising, skin punctures, and other forms of post-harvest damage.
  • Work at a consistent, brisk pace for extended periods, often standing, bending, and reaching throughout the day.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in essential orchard and vineyard maintenance tasks during non-harvest periods, such as pruning, tree training, thinning, and weeding.
  • Assist with the setup, maintenance, and teardown of critical farm infrastructure, including irrigation lines and frost protection systems.
  • Support packing house operations by helping to sort, weigh, and carefully pack fruit into final shipping containers and boxes.
  • Load and unload trucks with full bins of harvested produce, empty containers, and other essential farm supplies and equipment.
  • Perform trellis system repairs and general maintenance to ensure proper support for the growth of vines and fruit-bearing trees.
  • Contribute to general farm cleanup and property maintenance duties as assigned to ensure a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Follow detailed instructions for selective picking, ensuring that immature fruit is left for subsequent harvests later in the season.
  • Accurately record personal picking data, such as the number of bins filled or total weight, for payroll and farm inventory purposes.

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Fruit Identification: Ability to accurately distinguish between ripe and unripe fruit based on color, size, and texture.
  • Harvesting Tool Proficiency: Skilled in the use of hand tools like clippers, shears, and picking bags.
  • Ladder Safety & Use: Competent and confident in safely positioning, climbing, and working from orchard ladders.
  • Sorting & Grading: Capable of quickly sorting fruit based on quality, size, and grade specifications.
  • Proper Handling Techniques: Knowledge of how to handle delicate produce to prevent bruising, abrasions, and spoilage.
  • Basic Equipment Operation: Familiarity with operating small farm vehicles or equipment is a plus.
  • Counting & Tallying: Ability to accurately track and report the quantity of fruit harvested.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Preferred:
