Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Collect and document fuel samples from storage tanks, pipelines, delivery trucks, aircraft refueling systems, and production lines using approved sampling procedures and strict chain-of-custody controls.
- Perform standardized physical and chemical tests on fuels such as density (ASTM D4052), viscosity (D445), flash point (D93), distillation (D86), sulfur content, water & sediment (D2709/D1796), cetane/octane determination, and API gravity using validated methods.
- Operate and troubleshoot laboratory instruments including gas chromatographs (GC/GC-FID), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analyzers, viscometers, flash point testers, bomb calorimeters, and Karl Fischer titrators to produce accurate and repeatable results.
- Prepare, condition, and analyze fuel blends, additives, and suspect samples for conformity to specification limits and perform blend verification to support production or delivery.
- Enter, review, and validate analytical data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or equivalent electronic data systems; ensure accurate transcription and metadata (sample IDs, collection times).
- Execute method validations, calibration routines, and routine performance checks on instruments; maintain calibration logs, certificates, and traceability records to regulatory and internal standards.
- Investigate out-of-specification (OOS) results and non-conformances, perform root cause analysis, document findings, and support corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) with cross-functional teams.
- Produce clear, timely, and technically accurate test reports, certificates of analysis (COA), and chain-of-custody documents for internal stakeholders, suppliers, and regulatory customers.
- Maintain rigorous QA/QC procedures including running standards, blanks, reference materials, proficiency tests, and participating in inter-laboratory comparisons to ensure analytical integrity.
- Adhere to laboratory safety, hazardous materials handling (HAZMAT), and environmental protocols including SDS management, PPE use, spill response, and safe storage/disposal of fuels and solvents.
- Support field testing operations including portable analyzers, on-site sampling, and immediate pass/fail screening to support production decisions and emergency response.
- Assist in development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), test methods, and work instructions to reflect best practices, regulatory updates, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Maintain laboratory supplies, reagents, and consumables inventory; coordinate with procurement and vendors to ensure uninterrupted operations and cost-effective sourcing.
- Train and mentor junior technicians and contractors on sampling technique, instrument operation, data entry, QA/QC checks, and safety expectations to build team capability and consistency.
- Coordinate sample logistics with operations, dispatch, and third-party laboratories including packaging, labeling, shipping documentation, and temperature-controlled transport when required.
- Perform microbiological fuel testing (where applicable) for contamination and biodegradation indicators and work with microbiology specialists to mitigate microbial fuel issues.
- Conduct trend analysis and statistical process control (SPC) on serial test data to identify drifting instruments, batch anomalies, or production quality trends and recommend process adjustments.
- Provide technical support to production, blending, maintenance, and sales teams on fuel specifications, incompatibility issues, and product acceptance criteria.
- Participate in internal and external audits (ISO 17025, customer audits) and implement audit findings, including evidence collection, corrective action plans, and improvement verification.
- Ensure proper labeling, storage, and documentation of retained samples and reference materials; manage sample retention schedules aligned with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Implement and monitor contamination control practices for sampling points and transfer lines to minimize cross-contamination and false positives in analysis.
- Prepare and manage weekly/monthly KPI reports for lab performance, turnaround time (TAT), test throughput, error rates, and corrective action metrics for laboratory management review.
- Support development and piloting of new test methods for emerging fuel types (biofuels, renewable diesel, blended fuels) including small-scale R&D testing and scale-up verification.
- Liaise with external laboratories, standard bodies, and vendors to stay informed of method changes, new reference materials, and instrument upgrades relevant to fuel testing best practices.
