Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely and efficiently operate a commercial tractor-trailer or straight truck equipped with a tanker to transport and deliver bulk petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel, and heating oil.
- Perform comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections in accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company policy, meticulously documenting any defects or maintenance needs.
- Accurately load petroleum products at designated supply terminals (racks), ensuring proper product type, quantity, and adherence to all terminal-specific safety procedures.
- Execute precise and safe unloading procedures at customer locations, which may include service stations, fleet yards, and bulk storage facilities, utilizing specialized pumps, hoses, and meters.
- Strictly adhere to all federal, state, and local regulations governing the transportation of hazardous materials, including proper vehicle placarding and secure handling of all shipping papers (Bills of Lading).
- Maintain constant situational awareness to prevent spills, leaks, or accidents, and be fully prepared to implement emergency response and spill containment procedures if necessary.
- Accurately record all delivery information, including meter readings, product temperatures, and delivery times, using onboard computer systems or handwritten logs for billing and inventory accuracy.
- Proficiently utilize Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to maintain an accurate and compliant record of driving hours, on-duty time, and rest periods as mandated by FMCSA Hours of Service rules.
- Provide exceptional customer service during every delivery, professionally interacting with site personnel and representing the company with the utmost integrity.
- Navigate routes efficiently using maps and GPS technology, proactively adapting to traffic, weather conditions, and construction to ensure on-time deliveries.
- Maintain the cleanliness and general maintenance of the assigned vehicle, both interior and exterior, to uphold a professional image and ensure safe operation.
- Secure all equipment, including hoses, fittings, and adapters, after each delivery to prevent loss, damage, or safety hazards during transit.
- Conduct regular checks on all safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, spill kits, and personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring they are present and in good working order.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with dispatch regarding route progress, potential delays, delivery issues, and availability for future assignments.
- Diligently gauge and record fuel levels in customer tanks before and after delivery to ensure accurate billing and prevent dangerous overfills.
- Manage and submit all required paperwork, including delivery tickets, inspection reports, and expense receipts, in a neat, timely, and organized manner.
Secondary Functions
- Actively participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews to foster a culture of continuous improvement and safety excellence.
- Report any customer feedback, complaints, or potential new business opportunities to the appropriate management and sales teams.
- Assist with light maintenance tasks and general upkeep of the yard and fueling facility as directed by a supervisor.
- Provide constructive feedback on routing software, onboard technology, and delivery procedures to help enhance operational efficiency and driver safety.
- Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to newer drivers on company procedures and safe product handling practices when called upon.
- Collaborate with the maintenance team by providing detailed descriptions of vehicle issues to facilitate efficient and accurate repairs.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Current HAZMAT (H) and Tanker (N) endorsements are mandatory.
- Proven ability to operate commercial vehicles with both manual and automatic transmissions.
- Deep, practical knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, and EPA regulations for hazardous materials transport.
- Experience with loading and unloading procedures at automated fuel terminals (racks).
- Competency in using Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs), onboard computers, and other fleet management technology.
- Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations for gauging tanks and verifying delivery volumes.
- Proficiency in performing detailed pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
