Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conceptualize, implement, and oversee a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising strategy to meet and exceed ambitious revenue goals across a diverse portfolio of funding streams.
  • Personally manage and cultivate a portfolio of high-net-worth individual donors and prospects, guiding them through a thoughtful stewardship cycle to secure major and principal gifts.
  • Provide inspirational leadership, mentorship, and day-to-day management for the development team, setting clear goals and fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture.
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to empower them as fundraising ambassadors, staffing their cultivation meetings and leveraging their networks to expand our reach.
  • Direct the organization's entire grant lifecycle, including prospect research, proposal development, and submission for foundation, corporate, and government funding, ensuring meticulous reporting and compliance.
  • Design and execute multi-channel annual giving campaigns, including direct mail, digital fundraising, and giving days, to grow our base of individual donors and increase retention.
  • Develop and lead the strategy for a robust corporate partnership program, identifying, soliciting, and securing sponsorships and corporate foundation support.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of all fundraising events, from intimate cultivation dinners to large-scale galas, ensuring they are both profitable and effective mission-advancing experiences.
  • Develop and manage the annual departmental budget, ensuring fundraising efforts are cost-effective and deliver a strong return on investment.
  • Create and implement a sophisticated donor stewardship and recognition program to ensure all supporters feel valued, informed, and connected to our impact.
  • Lead the strategic planning and execution of special initiatives, including capital campaigns, endowment building, and planned giving programs.
  • Serve as a key member of the organization's leadership team, contributing to overall strategic planning and ensuring alignment between fundraising activities and programmatic goals.
  • Utilize data and analytics to drive decision-making, track key performance indicators (KPIs), forecast revenue, and generate regular, insightful reports for the leadership team and Board.
  • Act as a compelling and passionate spokesperson for the organization, effectively articulating our mission and impact to diverse audiences, including donors, partners, and the public.
  • Stay abreast of current fundraising trends, best practices, and philanthropic landscapes to ensure our strategies remain innovative, effective, and competitive.

Secondary Functions

  • Oversee the management and optimization of the donor database (CRM), ensuring data integrity, accurate gift processing, and timely acknowledgments.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and communications team to create compelling fundraising collateral, case statements, and donor-facing materials.
  • Manage relationships with external vendors and consultants, including grant writers, event planners, and fundraising counsel, to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Guide the development team in conducting in-depth prospect research to identify and qualify new potential sources of funding.
  • Support the finance department in the reconciliation of fundraising revenue and the annual audit process.
  • Represent the organization at community events, professional associations, and conferences to build brand visibility and network with potential funders.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CRM Proficiency: Deep expertise in fundraising databases such as Salesforce for Nonprofits, Raiser's Edge NXT, Blackbaud, or similar systems for pipeline management and reporting.
  • Major Gift Solicitation: Demonstrated, quantifiable success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and closing five, six, and seven-figure gifts from individuals and foundations.
  • Grant Writing & Management: Proven ability to write compelling, successful grant proposals and manage complex reporting requirements for institutional funders.
  • Budgeting & Financial Acumen: Skill in developing and managing departmental budgets, forecasting revenue, and analyzing fundraising ROI.
  • Campaign Strategy & Execution: Experience designing and leading comprehensive fundraising campaigns, including capital, annual, and/or planned giving campaigns.
  • Prospect Research: Proficiency with wealth screening and prospect research tools (e.g., WealthEngine, iWave, DonorSearch) to identify and qualify potential donors.
  • Digital Fundraising: Knowledge of online giving platforms, email marketing, and social media fundraising strategies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 8-12+ years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising.

Preferred:

  • A minimum of 8 years of professional fundraising experience with a proven track record of securing major gifts and meeting ambitious revenue targets.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience managing and leading a development team.
  • Experience working directly with a Board of Directors and executive leadership to drive fundraising success.
  • Direct experience leading a capital campaign or other major fundraising initiative is highly desirable.
