Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Consult with bereaved family members and friends in-person or via phone to discuss funeral arrangements, offering compassionate guidance and emotional support.
  • Expertly guide families through the selection of services, merchandise (caskets, urns, vaults), and personalization options, ensuring they understand all choices and associated costs.
  • Meticulously coordinate all logistical aspects of services, including dates, times, and locations for visitations, funerals, cremations, burials, and memorial services.
  • Act as the primary liaison between the family and all third-party vendors, including clergy, musicians, florists, cemeteries, and caterers, to ensure seamless execution of the service.
  • Prepare, file, and secure all necessary legal documentation and permits, such as death certificates, burial permits, and cremation authorizations, in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Oversee and direct funeral proceedings, ensuring the service flows smoothly and all family requests are honored with dignity and professionalism.
  • Manage the dignified and respectful transfer of the deceased from the place of death to the funeral home, adhering to all safety and health regulations.
  • Explain and process various payment options and insurance assignments, ensuring all financial arrangements are handled with transparency and sensitivity.
  • Present and arrange pre-need funeral plans, helping individuals make important end-of-life decisions in advance to ease the future burden on their families.
  • Provide families with information on grief counseling, bereavement support groups, and other community aftercare resources.
  • Create personalized memorial items, such as tribute videos, service folders, prayer cards, and online obituaries, to create a unique and meaningful tribute.
  • Maintain constant and clear communication with the family throughout the entire process, from the initial call to post-service follow-up.
  • Ensure all services are conducted in strict compliance with federal (FTC), state, and local funeral service regulations.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to death calls and immediate family needs during nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Maintain the pristine condition, cleanliness, and presentation of all funeral home facilities, including chapels, viewing rooms, and arrangement offices.
  • Manage the inventory of caskets, urns, and other funeral merchandise, assisting with ordering and display.
  • Build and nurture positive relationships with community members and organizations, such as hospitals, hospices, clergy, and nursing homes, to serve as a trusted local resource.
  • Safely and professionally operate all funeral home vehicles, including hearses, flower cars, and first-call vehicles, as required.
  • Assist with general office duties, including answering phones, managing correspondence, and maintaining accurate records in the funeral home management software.
  • Support marketing and community outreach events, such as open houses, grief seminars, or pre-planning workshops, to represent the funeral home positively.

  • State Licensure: Valid State Funeral Director and/or Embalmer license (as required by state law).
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of laws and regulations governing funeral service, including FTC Funeral Rule compliance.
  • Funeral Management Software: Proficiency with industry software (e.g., SRS Computing, Halcyon, Passare) for case management and record-keeping.
  • Contract Preparation: Skill in accurately preparing and executing arrangement contracts, financial agreements, and legal forms.
  • MS Office Suite: Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook for creating documents, managing communications, and tracking information.
  • Driving: Valid driver's license with a clean driving record for operating company vehicles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-approved apprenticeship or training program.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Mortuary Science or Funeral Service Education from an accredited institution (ABFSE).

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a client-facing role within the funeral service industry, or a related field such as social work, healthcare, or ministry.

Preferred:

  • 3+ years as a licensed Funeral Director, with a demonstrated history of successfully managing a full caseload and receiving positive family feedback. Experience in both at-need and pre-need arrangements is highly desirable.
