Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and analyze complex blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine project requirements, including materials, dimensions, and assembly procedures.
  • Select high-quality lumber, veneers, and other materials, meticulously evaluating grain, color, and structural integrity to meet design standards and ensure longevity.
  • Operate a comprehensive range of stationary and handheld woodworking machinery, including table saws, jointers, planers, shapers, and sanders, adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Utilize CNC machinery for precise and complex cutting operations, including programming, setup, and quality verification of machined parts.
  • Execute a variety of advanced joinery techniques, such as mortise and tenon, dovetails, and finger joints, ensuring strong and aesthetically pleasing connections.
  • Assemble furniture components using a combination of joinery, adhesives, and fasteners, employing clamps and jigs to ensure perfect alignment and structural integrity.
  • Prepare surfaces for finishing through detailed sanding, filling, and sealing to create a flawless foundation for stains and topcoats.
  • Apply a wide array of high-end finishes, including stains, oils, lacquers, and paints, using techniques like spraying, brushing, and hand-rubbing to achieve the desired look and feel.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control inspections at every stage of the production process, from material selection to final assembly, to identify and rectify any imperfections.
  • Install hardware with precision, including hinges, drawer slides, handles, and other fittings, ensuring smooth and reliable functionality.
  • Fabricate custom jigs, templates, and fixtures to enhance accuracy, ensure repeatability, and improve efficiency for complex or repetitive tasks.
  • Manage project timelines and material usage effectively, creating detailed cut lists to optimize material yield, minimize waste, and meet production deadlines.
  • Read and understand shop orders and work instructions to ensure each piece is built to exact client specifications.
  • Shape and laminate wood to form curved or intricate components, utilizing steam bending, vacuum pressing, or other forming techniques.
  • Collaborate directly with designers and project managers to provide technical feedback, solve design challenges, and ensure the final product aligns perfectly with the client's vision.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, actively participating in and promoting a culture of safety.
  • Perform routine maintenance, calibration, and cleaning of all tools and machinery to ensure optimal performance, safety, and longevity.
  • Assist in managing inventory of raw materials, hardware, and finishing supplies, notifying the supervisor when stock is low.
  • Carefully package and prepare finished furniture for safe and secure transport and delivery, ensuring products arrive in pristine condition.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to apprentices or junior woodworkers, sharing knowledge of techniques, safety, and best practices.
  • Stay informed about emerging woodworking techniques, tools, materials, and design trends to contribute to the continuous improvement of our craft and processes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Woodworking Machinery: Proficiency in operating and setting up table saws, jointers, planers, shapers, and routers.
  • Joinery Expertise: Deep knowledge and flawless execution of various joinery techniques (e.g., dovetails, mortise and tenon).
  • Finishing Techniques: Skill in applying a variety of finishes, including spraying lacquer, hand-rubbing oils, and staining.
  • Blueprint & Drawing Interpretation: Ability to read and translate complex technical drawings and CAD plans into finished products.
  • Hand Tool Proficiency: Mastery of traditional hand tools, including chisels, hand planes, and saws for fine-tuning and detailed work.
  • CNC Operation: Experience with the setup, programming, and operation of CNC routers is highly desirable.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from a vocational school or community college in Woodworking, Cabinet Making, or Furniture Design.
  • Completion of a formal apprenticeship program under a master craftsman.
