Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Meticulously prepare wooden furniture surfaces for finishing by stripping old finishes, removing imperfections, and ensuring a clean, smooth canvas for application.
- Skillfully sand raw wood surfaces and in-between finish coats using hand-sanding techniques and power tools to achieve specified smoothness and texture.
- Precisely mix and match stains, toners, and glazes to meet specific color and hue requirements, ensuring consistency across multiple pieces and projects.
- Expertly apply a wide range of finishes, including lacquers, varnishes, shellacs, oils, and polyurethanes, using spray guns, brushes, and rubbing techniques.
- Perform high-quality furniture repairs, including filling dents, gouges, and cracks, and executing structural fixes to ensure stability and longevity.
- Execute specialized finishing techniques such as French polishing, distressing, antiquing, and cerusing to create custom, high-end aesthetic effects.
- Operate and maintain a variety of professional finishing equipment, including HVLP spray guns, pressure pots, and automated sanding machines, ensuring they are clean and in good working order.
- Conduct thorough quality control inspections at every stage of the finishing process to identify and correct any defects, ensuring the final product meets our exacting standards.
- Manage workflow and prioritize tasks effectively to meet tight project deadlines without compromising the quality of the finish.
- Read and interpret detailed work orders, blueprints, and finishing specifications to ensure all client requirements are accurately met.
- Safely handle and store a variety of chemicals, stains, and solvents, adhering to all company and OSHA safety protocols and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Carefully mask and tape off sections of furniture not intended for finishing to protect them and create clean, sharp lines.
- Perform final buffing, waxing, and polishing to achieve the desired level of sheen and provide a durable, protective topcoat.
- Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of different wood species (e.g., oak, maple, walnut, mahogany) and their unique properties and reactions to various finishes.
- Collaborate with designers and clients to understand their vision and provide expert advice on finish options, colors, and techniques.
- Document the finishing process and formulas used for specific projects to ensure replicability and consistency for future orders or repairs.
- Perform touch-ups and spot repairs on finished pieces that may have been damaged during assembly or transportation.
- Manage inventory of finishing supplies, including stains, solvents, sandpaper, and topcoats, and communicate restocking needs to the supply manager.
- Uphold a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the finishing booth and surrounding workshop areas.
- Continuously research and stay current with new finishing materials, techniques, and industry best practices to enhance skills and improve processes.
- Disassemble and reassemble furniture as needed to ensure all components are properly and completely finished.
- Troubleshoot and resolve finishing issues, such as fisheyes, orange peel, blushing, and uneven coloring, using advanced problem-solving skills.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice-level polishers and finishers, sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Contribute to team meetings by providing feedback on process improvements, workflow efficiency, and new material testing.
- Liaise with the carpentry and assembly departments to ensure a smooth transition of pieces between production stages.
- Participate in the final assembly and installation of finished furniture on-site when required, ensuring a flawless final presentation.
