Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously strip down furniture to its bare frame, carefully removing old upholstery, padding, springs, and tacks without damaging the underlying structure.
  • Thoroughly inspect furniture frames for any structural defects, such as loose joints or broken parts, and perform necessary repairs including gluing, doweling, and reinforcing.
  • Accurately measure and cut upholstery materials, including fabric, leather, and vinyl, ensuring precise pattern matching and alignment for a seamless, professional finish.
  • Operate heavy-duty industrial sewing machines to skillfully sew fabric pieces together, creating custom-fitted covers, cushions, and decorative elements like welting and piping.
  • Apply and secure padding materials such as foam, cotton, and batting to furniture frames to create the desired shape, comfort, and contour.
  • Expertly stretch and attach fabric or leather onto the furniture frame, using staple guns, tack hammers, and webbing stretchers to achieve a taut, wrinkle-free surface.
  • Perform advanced upholstery techniques including diamond tufting, buttoning, channel-backing, and applying decorative trim or nailhead details with precision.
  • Re-tie and replace spring systems, including eight-way hand-tied springs, sinuous springs, and coil springs, to restore the furniture's foundational support and comfort.
  • Develop and work from patterns for new or custom furniture pieces, translating design concepts into tangible, upholstered products.
  • Consult with clients or designers to understand project requirements, provide expert recommendations on fabric selection, and estimate material and labor costs.
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of various textiles, leathers, and synthetic materials, understanding their properties, durability, and suitability for different applications.
  • Manage workshop inventory, tracking supplies of fabric, foam, hardware, and other materials, and placing orders to ensure continuous workflow.
  • Safely operate a range of hand and power tools, including scissors, staple pullers, pneumatic guns, tack hammers, and cutting equipment, while adhering to all safety guidelines.
  • Ensure all finished pieces meet the company's high standards of quality, conducting final inspections for flaws in stitching, alignment, and overall appearance.
  • Refinish and touch up wooden components of furniture, such as legs and arms, to complement the new upholstery and create a fully restored piece.
  • Construct and upholster new furniture frames according to specifications, working from blueprints or custom design plans.
  • Disassemble and reassemble furniture pieces as required for the upholstery process, ensuring all components are correctly re-installed.
  • Keep the workspace clean, organized, and safe, properly disposing of waste materials and maintaining tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Collaborate effectively with other craftspeople, including woodworkers, finishers, and designers, to ensure a cohesive and high-quality end product.
  • Manage project timelines and prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines for multiple concurrent upholstery projects.
  • Document work processes and material usage for each project to ensure accurate record-keeping and billing.
  • Stay current with emerging upholstery techniques, tools, and materials by participating in workshops or trade shows to continuously improve skills.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
