Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously execute pre-defined test plans and test cases across various game builds to verify functionality, performance, and stability.
  • Proactively identify, isolate, and accurately document software defects, gameplay issues, and graphical glitches using bug-tracking systems like Jira or DevTrack.
  • Author clear, concise, and detailed bug reports that include precise steps to reproduce, expected vs. actual results, and supporting evidence such as screenshots or video captures.
  • Conduct thorough regression testing to ensure that previously identified and fixed issues have not re-emerged in new game builds.
  • Perform comprehensive smoke tests on new builds to quickly assess core stability and determine if the build is viable for further, more in-depth testing.
  • Engage in ad-hoc and exploratory testing, leveraging your knowledge of the game and player behavior to uncover issues not covered by formal test cases.
  • Verify the successful implementation of bug fixes by re-testing resolved issues and closing out tickets in the bug database.
  • Evaluate game mechanics, user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and overall gameplay loops to provide both objective and subjective feedback to the design and development teams.
  • Test the game across a wide range of hardware configurations and platforms (PC, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android) to identify platform-specific issues.
  • Ensure the game meets all first-party platform compliance requirements (e.g., Sony's TRCs, Microsoft's TCRs, Nintendo's Lotcheck) before submission.
  • Collaborate directly with programmers, artists, and designers to communicate issues effectively and assist in the troubleshooting and resolution process.
  • Participate in multiplayer testing sessions to identify and report issues related to networking, server stability, and online gameplay features.
  • Assess game performance, including frame rates, load times, and memory usage, and report any degradation or performance-related problems.
  • Conduct localization and internationalization (LQA) testing to check for text overlaps, translation accuracy, cultural appropriateness, and proper implementation of localized assets.
  • Execute compatibility tests to ensure the game functions correctly with various operating systems, drivers, and peripherals.
  • Maintain and update the QA team's test documentation, including test plans, checklists, and testing guides, ensuring they remain relevant throughout the development cycle.
  • Provide qualitative feedback on game balance, difficulty curves, and player progression to help the design team fine-tune the player experience.
  • Test in-game monetization features, virtual economies, and storefronts to ensure they function correctly and offer a fair value proposition.
  • Run and analyze data from automated test scripts, reporting any failures or anomalies to the QA Automation team.
  • Take ownership of testing specific game features or content areas, becoming the subject matter expert and primary QA point of contact for that component.
  • Assist in the creation and maintenance of a comprehensive game-wide bug database, ensuring data integrity and consistency.
  • Participate actively in team playtests, providing structured feedback and contributing to discussions about the game's core experience.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the production team by providing accurate and timely reports on bug statistics, testing progress, and overall build quality.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of QA processes, methodologies, and tools within the department.
  • Collaborate with Community Management and Player Support teams to investigate and reproduce bugs reported by the live player community.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies as part of the broader development team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency with industry-standard bug tracking software (e.g., Jira, Azure DevOps, Hansoft, DevTrack).
  • Experience using test case management tools such as TestRail, Zephyr, or similar software.
  • In-depth knowledge of different testing methodologies, including black box, grey box, regression, and usability testing.
  • Strong familiarity with major gaming platforms (PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch) and/or mobile operating systems (iOS, Android).
  • A solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and how QA integrates within agile and waterfall frameworks.
  • Ability to capture and edit video footage to clearly demonstrate complex bugs.
  • Familiarity with the basic functionality of game engines like Unreal Engine or Unity is a significant plus.
  • Knowledge of PC hardware, software, and the ability to troubleshoot compatibility issues.
