Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, service, and repair a wide range of residential and commercial overhead garage doors, openers, and associated components.
  • Accurately diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues, including problems with springs, cables, rollers, tracks, and logic boards.
  • Expertly handle the replacement of critical components, including the precise winding and balancing of torsion springs and the replacement of extension springs and lift cables.
  • Perform comprehensive safety inspections and preventative maintenance on existing garage door systems to ensure optimal functionality, safety, and longevity.
  • Install and program electronic garage door openers, keypads, smart-home integrations, and remote controls, ensuring seamless operation.
  • Assemble and install new sectional, rolling steel, or custom garage doors according to manufacturer specifications and rigorous company quality standards.
  • Provide exceptional on-site customer service, clearly explaining diagnoses, walking through proposed solutions, and providing transparent cost estimates before beginning work.
  • Educate customers on the proper operation, safety features, and routine maintenance of their new or repaired garage door system to maximize its lifespan.
  • Test and fine-tune all installed or repaired components, paying close attention to safety features like photo-eye sensors, force settings, and auto-reverse mechanisms.
  • Measure door openings and assess existing framing to ensure a perfect fit and secure installation of new doors, performing light carpentry modifications when necessary.
  • Respond to emergency service calls, sometimes outside of normal business hours, to assist customers with urgent security and access issues.
  • Safely operate and maintain a company service vehicle, adhering to all traffic laws and company policies.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a well-organized and fully-stocked service vehicle, managing an accurate inventory of parts, tools, and equipment to ensure job readiness.
  • Complete all required digital and paper documentation, including work orders, invoices, and daily service logs, with accuracy and in a timely manner.
  • Identify opportunities to recommend and sell product or service upgrades, such as high-cycle springs, insulated doors, or new opener technology, to better meet customer needs.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for yourself, your team, and the customer.
  • Utilize company-provided mobile devices and software to manage schedules, process customer payments, and communicate effectively with the dispatch office.
  • Participate actively in ongoing training and certification programs to stay current with new products, advanced technologies, and evolving installation techniques.
  • Collaborate with team members, sales staff, and dispatchers to ensure efficient scheduling, job completion, and a seamless customer experience from start to finish.
  • Ensure all job sites are left clean, organized, and free of debris upon completion of work, reflecting a professional company image.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proven proficiency in installing, repairing, and troubleshooting a variety of residential and commercial garage doors and operators.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and expert-level ability to use a wide range of hand and power tools effectively and safely.
  • In-depth knowledge of torsion and extension spring systems, including safe winding, conversion, and replacement procedures.
  • Competence in low-voltage wiring for openers, keypads, safety sensors, and other control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including blueprints, wiring diagrams, and installation manuals.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory.
  • Basic welding or metal fabrication skills are a significant advantage.
  • Familiarity with major garage door and opener brands (e.g., Clopay, Wayne Dalton, Amarr, LiftMaster, Genie).
