Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete installation of new residential and commercial sectional and rolling steel garage doors according to manufacturer specifications and company standards.
  • Accurately diagnose and troubleshoot a wide range of malfunctions in garage door systems, including issues with springs, cables, rollers, tracks, and electronic components.
  • Perform skilled repairs and replacements of critical components such as broken torsion springs, extension springs, frayed cables, and damaged door panels.
  • Install, service, and repair all makes and models of electric garage door openers, including adjusting travel limits, force settings, and safety sensors.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventative maintenance services on overhead doors and operators to ensure long-term reliability and prevent future breakdowns.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emergency service requests, effectively securing premises and restoring functionality to doors in a timely manner.
  • Ensure all safety features, such as photo-eye sensors and auto-reverse mechanisms, are properly installed, aligned, and tested to meet federal and local safety regulations.
  • Perform precise adjustments on door hardware, including track alignment, roller lubrication, and hinge tightening, to ensure smooth and quiet operation.
  • Install and program a variety of access control devices, including remote controls, wireless keypads, and modern smart-home-integrated systems (e.g., MyQ).
  • Provide detailed and transparent on-site estimates for necessary repairs or replacement options, clearly explaining the scope of work and associated costs to the customer.
  • Educate customers on the proper use, care, and maintenance of their garage door systems to enhance performance and extend the product's lifespan.
  • Perform quality control checks on all completed installations and repairs to guarantee the highest level of workmanship and ensure complete customer satisfaction.
  • Operate specialized equipment, such as scissor lifts and forklifts, safely and effectively during large-scale commercial door installations.
  • Address and resolve any customer concerns or issues on-site, demonstrating a commitment to service excellence and maintaining the company's reputation.
  • Maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the industry’s diverse product lines, including various door types, materials, and opener technologies.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage and maintain an accurate inventory of parts, tools, and equipment on the assigned service vehicle to ensure readiness for any job.
  • Complete all digital or paper work orders, invoices, and service records with meticulous detail and submit them in accordance with company procedures.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the assigned service vehicle and all company-provided tools and equipment.
  • Actively identify and recommend opportunities for system upgrades, improved safety features, or enhanced products that would benefit the customer.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and OSHA guidelines to foster a safe work environment for yourself, your team, and the customer.
  • Collaborate effectively with dispatchers, sales staff, and management to ensure seamless service delivery and communication flow.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong, intuitive understanding of mechanical systems, gears, springs, and leverage for effective troubleshooting and repair.
  • Tool Proficiency: Confident and safe operation of a wide range of hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
  • Electrical Knowledge: Experience with low-voltage wiring, connecting control panels, and troubleshooting electrical components in garage door openers.
  • Torsion Spring Expertise: In-depth knowledge of winding and safely handling high-tension torsion springs, a critical and high-risk aspect of the job.
  • Welding & Fabrication: Basic welding skills for repairing steel components or fabricating custom brackets and supports as needed.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • IDEA (Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation) certification.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of direct experience in garage door service or a closely related mechanical trade.

Preferred: 3+ years of documented experience as a Garage Door Technician, including significant work on both residential and commercial/industrial door systems.
