This role is a critical, 24/7 operational function responsible for the real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of the pipeline system from a centralized control center. A Gas Controller ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient transportation of natural gas, balancing supply and demand, responding to system alarms and emergencies, and maintaining compliance with all federal and state regulations. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Continuously monitor real-time gas flow rates, pressures, temperatures, and quality across the pipeline network using SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to ensure operational integrity and system balance.
  • Remotely operate and adjust compressors, valves, regulators, and other pipeline facilities to manage pressure and flow, meeting all contractual delivery and receipt obligations.
  • Proactively identify and respond to abnormal operating conditions (AOCs), system alarms, and pressure deviations to prevent potential issues and maintain system stability.
  • Serve as the first point of contact and command during system emergencies, executing established emergency response plans with precision and calmness to mitigate risks and protect life and property.
  • Analyze and interpret system trends, volumetric data, and weather forecasts to anticipate changes in demand and proactively adjust system operations.
  • Coordinate planned and unplanned maintenance activities with field personnel, ensuring that work can be performed safely without jeopardizing system integrity or customer supply.
  • Manage and balance the daily pipeline inventory by directing gas flow to and from storage facilities and interconnects based on nominations, system conditions, and market demand.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate logs of all control room activities, including system adjustments, alarm responses, and communications, for regulatory and operational auditing.
  • Communicate critical operational information clearly and concisely to field staff, management, gas schedulers, and external stakeholders like interconnected pipelines and large-volume customers.
  • Implement and verify gas nominations and schedules, ensuring the physical flow of gas matches the commercial transactions for the day.
  • Monitor gas quality specifications using chromatograph data and take appropriate action if gas is off-spec to prevent damage to equipment and meet customer requirements.
  • Perform hydraulic modeling and simulations to predict the impact of operational changes, outages, or demand shifts on the pipeline system.
  • Ensure all control room operations are conducted in strict compliance with federal regulations (DOT/PHMSA Part 192), company policies, and control room management procedures.
  • Manage and curtail transportation services as necessary during capacity constraints or emergencies, following established tariff rules and procedures.
  • Participate in controller training programs, including simulator-based training, to maintain proficiency in normal, abnormal, and emergency scenarios.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the development and refinement of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and emergency response plans for the gas control center.
  • Provide support for post-incident analysis and root cause investigations, offering operational insights and data from control room logs.
  • Collaborate with the SCADA team to test and validate new system displays, alarm parameters, and control logic before implementation.
  • Train and mentor new or junior Gas Controllers, sharing expert knowledge of the system and operational best practices.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing documentation, logs, and explanations of control room activities and compliance measures.
  • Participate in tabletop drills and emergency response exercises with field operations, emergency services, and other departments.
  • Generate daily, weekly, and monthly operational summary reports for management, highlighting system performance, significant events, and key metrics.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • SCADA Systems: Expert proficiency in operating SCADA systems for real-time monitoring and remote control of pipeline assets.
  • Gas Hydraulics: Strong understanding of the principles of gas flow, pressure dynamics, and thermodynamics within a pipeline network.
  • Regulatory Compliance: In-depth knowledge of DOT/PHMSA regulations, particularly 49 CFR Part 192, and Control Room Management (CRM) rules.
  • Emergency Response: Ability to execute complex emergency plans and make critical decisions in high-stress situations.
  • Gas Scheduling & Nominations: Familiarity with the gas nomination, scheduling, and balancing process in a regulated or unregulated environment.
  • System Modeling: Experience with gas simulation software (e.g., Synergi Gas, GASS) to forecast system behavior is highly desirable.
  • Technical Documentation: Skill in reading and interpreting P&IDs (Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams), system maps, and operational manuals.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED combined with significant, direct experience in natural gas operations. An Associate's Degree in a technical field is often required.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Engineering (Mechanical, Petroleum, Chemical)
  • Engineering Technology
  • Business Administration or a related discipline

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-7 years of progressively responsible experience within the natural gas industry, with a strong preference for roles in pipeline operations, gas measurement, or instrumentation and control.

Preferred:

  • Direct experience working in a pipeline control room environment.
  • Prior hands-on experience as a pipeline field operator or technician.
  • Completion of industry-recognized operator qualification (OQ) tasks related to pipeline control and operations.
