Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, operate, and tend to CNC gear grinding machines (e.g., Reishauer, Kapp, Gleason, Liebherr) to perform high-precision grinding on hardened gear components.
  • Interpret and work from complex engineering drawings, blueprints, process sheets, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to determine machining requirements.
  • Select, mount, balance, and dress grinding wheels appropriate for the specific gear material and required surface finish, ensuring optimal cutting action and wheel life.
  • Perform meticulous in-process inspections using a wide variety of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and specialized gear inspection equipment (e.g., CMM, Klingelnberg, M&M).
  • Make precise adjustments to machine offsets, program parameters, and wheel dressing cycles to maintain dimensional accuracy and gear geometry within extremely tight tolerances.
  • Load and unload parts from the machine, either manually or by using overhead cranes and other lifting devices, ensuring proper clamping and alignment to prevent defects.
  • Analyze and interpret data from gear charting software to meticulously verify and document lead, profile, index, and runout specifications against engineering standards.
  • Monitor the entire grinding process for any irregularities, such as unusual noises, vibrations, or temperature fluctuations, and take immediate corrective action to prevent scrapped parts.
  • Conduct comprehensive first-piece and final inspection reports, accurately documenting all measurements and ensuring full traceability and compliance with quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose machine malfunctions, tooling issues, and dimensional deviations, collaborating effectively with maintenance or engineering teams for swift resolution.
  • Calculate and set machine controls to regulate critical factors such as grinding speed, feed rates, depth of cut, and coolant flow.
  • Understand and edit CNC programs (G-code and M-code) at the machine control to optimize grinding paths, improve cycle times, or compensate for process variations.
  • Verify the conformance of finished workpieces to all specifications, using precision measuring instruments and gear-checking machines to ensure they meet required tolerances.
  • Perform secondary operations such as deburring and cleaning of ground gears to prepare them for subsequent assembly or processing stages.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of gear geometry, including involute profiles, helix angles, root fillets, and the impact of grinding on these features.

  • Execute routine and preventative maintenance on grinding equipment, including cleaning, lubrication, filter changes, and checking fluid levels to ensure maximum machine uptime and reliability.
