Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive dimensional and visual inspections of highly complex and tight-tolerance gears, splines, and housings using advanced metrology equipment.
- Set up, program, and operate specialized gear inspection machinery, such as Klingelnberg P-Series, Gleason GMM/GMS, and M&M gear analyzers, to measure critical features.
- Interpret and apply complex information from engineering drawings, blueprints, and digital product definitions, with a heavy focus on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Analyze and interpret analytical gear chart data, including lead, profile, index, pitch, and runout, to identify non-conformances and manufacturing process deviations.
- Generate detailed and accurate first article, in-process, and final inspection reports, meticulously documenting all findings, measurements, and pass/fail criteria.
- Conduct regular calibration, verification, and maintenance of all gear lab inspection equipment and gauges to ensure their accuracy, repeatability, and reliability.
- Collaborate directly with manufacturing engineers and machinists to troubleshoot production issues, providing precise data and feedback to guide corrective actions and process improvements.
- Execute First Article Inspection (FAI) in accordance with AS9102 standards, compiling comprehensive documentation packages for customer submission and approval.
- Develop, write, and validate new inspection programs on gear analyzers and CMMs for new product introductions and engineering changes.
- Utilize a wide range of standard metrology hand tools, including micrometers, calipers, bore gages, indicators, and height gages, for manual checks and verifications.
- Apply knowledge of AGMA, ISO, and other relevant industry standards to determine the acceptability of gear quality and classify gears accordingly.
- Perform root cause analysis on non-conforming parts and actively participate in the Corrective and Preventive Action (CAPA) process to prevent recurrence.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and environmentally controlled gear laboratory, adhering to 5S principles and all safety protocols.
- Manage the non-conforming material process, including part segregation, identification, and disposition in coordination with the Material Review Board (MRB).
- Conduct surface finish, roundness, and form testing on gear teeth and related features using equipment like a profilometer or Talyrond.
- Review and validate incoming supplier data and perform receiving inspections on critical externally sourced components to ensure they meet specifications.
- Maintain meticulous and organized digital and hard-copy records of all inspection activities, results, and equipment calibration history within the Quality Management System (QMS).
- Provide technical support and mentorship to junior inspectors and manufacturing personnel on gear characteristics and proper measurement techniques.
- Participate actively in internal and external quality audits (e.g., AS9100, customer audits), presenting inspection records and demonstrating process compliance.
