Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly interpret and analyze blueprints, schematics, and construction drawings to determine project dimensions, material requirements, and installation procedures.
  • Perform high-quality rough carpentry, including the layout, cutting, and assembly of materials for wood and light-gauge metal stud framing for walls, floors, and roof systems.
  • Construct and install building frameworks, including walls, floor joists, and roof trusses, ensuring they are plumb, level, and square.
  • Precisely measure, cut, shape, and assemble wood, plywood, fiberglass, and other materials using a full range of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machines.
  • Install structures and fixtures such as windows, doors, frames, flooring, sub-flooring, siding, and both interior and exterior trim, ensuring proper fit and function.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding, temporary framing, shoring, and other support structures required for construction, adhering to strict safety protocols.
  • Build and set concrete forms for various structures, including foundations, footings, walls, and columns, and assist in concrete pouring and finishing as needed.
  • Install and finish drywall, including hanging sheets, taping, mudding, and sanding to create smooth, paint-ready surfaces.
  • Perform finish carpentry tasks with a high degree of precision, including the installation of cabinetry, baseboards, crown molding, shelving, and decorative trim.
  • Conduct repair and maintenance work on existing wooden structures, fixtures, and furniture, diagnosing issues and implementing effective solutions.
  • Take accurate measurements and calculate the size and quantity of materials needed for a project, minimizing waste and ensuring cost-effectiveness.
  • Rigorously adhere to all company, federal (OSHA), and local safety standards, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a hazard-free work area.
  • Install and secure various types of building insulation and vapor barriers to meet energy code and project specifications.
  • Fabricate and install custom wooden components on-site as required by project plans or unforeseen site conditions.
  • Operate a variety of heavy and light equipment, including forklifts, scissor lifts, and boom lifts, upon receiving proper certification and training.
  • Inspect and evaluate the quality of completed work, both personal and that of others, to ensure it meets project standards and building codes.
  • Collaborate effectively with other tradespeople, such as electricians, plumbers, and painters, to coordinate work schedules and ensure project milestones are met.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site by regularly cleaning up debris, storing materials properly, and managing waste disposal.
  • Prepare detailed daily reports or logs of work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered during the construction process.
  • Respond to and resolve warranty or service calls, performing necessary adjustments, repairs, or replacements to ensure client satisfaction.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and on-the-job training to carpenter apprentices and general laborers to foster skill development.
  • Perform routine inspection, cleaning, and preventative maintenance on hand tools, power tools, and equipment to ensure they remain in safe and efficient working order.

  • Participate in pre-construction planning meetings and daily "toolbox talks" to discuss safety procedures, project goals, and potential challenges.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint and Schematic Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and execute complex construction drawings and specifications.
  • Framing (Wood & Metal Stud): Proficiency in constructing wall, floor, and ceiling frames that are structurally sound and precise.
  • Finish Carpentry: Skill in installing trim, molding, cabinetry, and doors with a high level of detail and quality.
  • Concrete Formwork: Knowledge of building, setting, and stripping forms for concrete foundations, slabs, and walls.
  • Power Tool Proficiency: Safe and efficient operation of saws (miter, circular, table), drills, routers, sanders, and pneumatic nail guns.
  • Accurate Measuring & Layout: Mastery of using tape measures, levels, lasers, transits, and framing squares for precise layout.
  • Material Estimation: Ability to calculate material needs, reduce waste, and manage inventory for assigned tasks.
  • Scaffolding and Ladder Safety: Competency in the safe erection, use, and dismantling of scaffolding and proper ladder techniques.
    -Drywall Installation & Finishing: Skill in hanging, taping, and finishing drywall to a Level 4 or 5 standard.
  • Building Code Knowledge: A strong working knowledge of local and national building codes and construction standards.
