Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Install, maintain, and repair electrical control, wiring, and lighting systems, ensuring all work is performed to code and quality standards.
Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical diagrams, and electrical schematics to determine the layout and installation requirements for new or modified systems.
Perform thorough inspections and systematic testing of electrical systems, components, and equipment to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair.
Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components using advanced test equipment and hand tools to accurately locate the cause of a breakdown and implement effective solutions.
Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, outlets, and other electrical components, ensuring all connections are secure, safe, and compatible.
Install and maintain a wide variety of electrical equipment, including motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), generators, lighting fixtures, and industrial control panels.
Guarantee all electrical installations, repairs, and maintenance activities strictly adhere to the National Electrical Code (NEC) and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
Execute preventative maintenance programs on electrical systems and components to ensure operational continuity and prevent unplanned outages.
Skillfully bend, install, and run various types of electrical conduit (e.g., EMT, Rigid, IMC) and pull wiring through for diverse applications.
Terminate and splice wires and cables, ensuring secure and properly insulated connections for both high and low-voltage systems.
Plan the layout and installation of new electrical service, including panel boards, switchboards, and service entrance conductors.
Utilize a variety of power tools, hand tools, and specialized testing equipment such as multimeters, ammeters, voltmeters, and insulation testers to perform duties.
Manage and execute the replacement and upgrading of outdated electrical systems and components to enhance safety, efficiency, and capacity.
Respond promptly and professionally to emergency service calls, performing urgent repairs to minimize operational downtime and mitigate safety risks.
Install, test, and maintain grounding and bonding systems to protect personnel and equipment from electrical faults and surges.
Perform lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures on electrical equipment before commencing any maintenance or repair work to ensure a zero-energy state.

Secondary Functions

Maintain meticulous records of all work performed, including detailed service reports, time logs, and material requisitions.
Communicate effectively and professionally with clients, project managers, and other trades to coordinate work schedules and provide clear project status updates.
Serve as a safety leader on-site, consistently promoting and adhering to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Mentor and provide on-the-job training for apprentice electricians and helpers, fostering their skills in proper techniques and safety standards.
Assist in estimating the time, labor, and material costs for electrical projects, repairs, and new installations.
Stay current with the latest industry advancements, emerging technologies, and critical updates to electrical codes and safety regulations.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

NEC Code Proficiency: Deep, practical knowledge and application of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and relevant local building codes.
Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex electrical blueprints, single-line diagrams, and control schematics.
Advanced Troubleshooting: Expertise in using multimeters, clamp meters, megohmmeters, and other diagnostic tools to systematically identify and resolve complex electrical issues.
Conduit Installation: Skilled in bending, threading, and installing various types of electrical conduit, including EMT, IMC, and Rigid pipe.
Wiring & Terminations: Proficiency in installing, terminating, and splicing low and high-voltage wiring and cables according to specifications.
Motor Controls & VFDs: Experience with installing, wiring, and troubleshooting motor control circuits, contactors, relays, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
Panel & Switchgear Installation: Competence in the safe installation, termination, and maintenance of electrical panels, switchgear, and transformers.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED.
Successful completion of a certified Electrical Apprenticeship program.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 4-10+ years of documented post-apprenticeship experience as a commercial or industrial electrician.

Preferred:

Valid State-issued Journeyman or Master Electrician license.
Experience working in both new construction and occupied service environments.
OSHA 30 certification is highly desirable.
