Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly supervise, coordinate, and lead multiple construction crews and craft workers, assigning daily tasks and ensuring optimal crew performance.
  • Thoroughly interpret construction blueprints, drawings, and specifications to plan and execute all phases of work, ensuring strict adherence to design.
  • Develop, communicate, and implement detailed short-term work plans, look-ahead schedules, and task sequencing to drive project momentum and meet critical milestones.
  • Champion a world-class safety culture by leading daily safety huddles (tailgate talks), performing job hazard analyses, and rigorously enforcing all company and OSHA safety protocols.
  • Monitor and meticulously manage labor productivity and work quality, providing real-time coaching and implementing corrective measures to maintain high standards.
  • Serve as the primary on-site communication hub, effectively relaying information and directives between the Superintendent and the field personnel.
  • Conduct continuous inspections of work-in-progress and completed tasks to guarantee conformity with project specifications, quality benchmarks, and building codes.
  • Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve on-site conflicts, construction challenges, and logistical issues to prevent delays and cost overruns.
  • Coordinate the logistics and scheduling of necessary materials, tools, and heavy equipment, ensuring resources are readily available to support workflow.
  • Train, mentor, and develop crew members and junior foremen, fostering their skills and building a capable, cohesive team.
  • Accurately complete and submit daily field documentation, including crew timecards, production reports, safety logs, and incident reports.
  • Manage and coordinate the activities of subcontractors on-site, ensuring their work is integrated seamlessly with self-perform operations and adheres to the project schedule.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate actively in project planning and coordination meetings, offering valuable field-level insights on constructability, sequencing, and labor planning.
  • Manage the proper care, routine maintenance, and security of all company-owned and rented tools, equipment, and materials on the job site.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional job site that promotes safety, efficiency, and a positive image to clients and the public.
  • Accurately track and document all project changes, extra work requests, and potential change events, communicating them promptly to project management.
  • Verify that all personnel on-site possess the appropriate training and certifications for the tasks and equipment they are assigned to operate.
  • Facilitate effective collaboration between different trade crews (e.g., electrical, mechanical, civil) to optimize workflow and prevent inter-disciplinary conflicts.
  • Assist the Superintendent in managing project costs at the field level by monitoring resource usage, minimizing waste, and controlling overtime.
  • Act as a primary on-site representative of the company, professionally interacting with clients, inspectors, and other external stakeholders as required.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Blueprint & Specification Interpretation: Expert ability to read, analyze, and execute work based on complex construction drawings and technical documents.
  • Construction Software Proficiency: Experience with project management and scheduling software such as Procore, PlanGrid, Bluebeam, or similar platforms.
  • OSHA & Safety Regulations: In-depth knowledge of OSHA standards (OSHA 30 certification is highly preferred) and job site safety enforcement.
  • Trade-Specific Expertise: Mastery of a specific construction trade (e.g., concrete, carpentry, electrical, mechanical) with a broad understanding of others.
  • First Aid / CPR: Current certification is often required to respond to on-site medical emergencies.
  • Quality Control & Assurance: Ability to inspect work against established standards and implement corrective action plans.
  • Resource & Equipment Management: Skill in planning for and managing the logistics of materials, tools, and heavy equipment on a dynamic job site.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Completion of a formal Apprenticeship program in a relevant trade.
  • Certificate or Associate's Degree in a related field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Construction Management
  • A specific Skilled Trade (e.g., Carpentry, Electrical, Pipefitting)

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 5-10 years of progressive experience in the construction industry, with at least 3-5 years in a supervisory role (e.g., Foreman, Leadman).

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience leading crews of 10+ craft workers on commercial, industrial, or civil construction projects of significant scale and complexity.
  • A proven track record of completing projects safely, on time, and with a high degree of quality.
