Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Thoroughly prepare a variety of interior and exterior surfaces for painting by scraping, sanding, patching, caulking, and cleaning to ensure a smooth and durable finish.
  • Apply coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to surfaces using brushes, rollers, and various spray equipment (airless, HVLP) to meet project specifications.
  • Skillfully mix, match, and blend paints and stains to achieve desired colors, shades, and consistencies, ensuring uniformity across the project.
  • Erect, move, and dismantle scaffolding, ladders, and other work platforms in strict adherence to safety regulations and job site requirements.
  • Diligently protect all surrounding surfaces, fixtures, and furnishings by carefully covering them with drop cloths, masking tape, and plastic sheeting.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and technical specifications to determine the scope of work, material requirements, and application procedures.
  • Perform high-quality drywall repairs, including patching holes, taping seams, and applying texture to create a seamless surface ready for priming and painting.
  • Inspect completed work for runs, drips, and other imperfections, performing necessary touch-ups to ensure a flawless, high-quality final product.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, including proper storage of materials and daily cleanup of the job site.
  • Advise clients or supervisors on paint color selection, finish types, and maintenance techniques to ensure long-lasting satisfaction and results.
  • Calculate the amount of materials needed for each project and provide accurate estimates for time and cost to supervisors or clients.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of power and hand tools, including sanders, grinders, pressure washers, and paint sprayers, ensuring they are in good working condition.
  • Apply specialty and decorative finishes, such as faux painting, glazing, and texturing, as specified by the project design.
  • Safely handle, store, and dispose of paint, solvents, and other chemical substances in accordance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Coordinate work schedules with other tradespeople, such as carpenters and electricians, to ensure project workflow remains efficient and on schedule.
  • Conduct final project walk-throughs with clients or supervisors to ensure all requirements have been met and to guarantee customer satisfaction.
  • Strip old paint and finishes from surfaces using methods such as hand scraping, power sanding, heat guns, or chemical paint removers.
  • Apply waterproofing sealants and anti-corrosive treatments to exterior and interior surfaces to protect them from moisture and environmental damage.
  • Maintain an accurate log of work performed, materials used, and hours worked for project tracking and reporting purposes.
  • Adhere to all company policies and OSHA safety standards, consistently utilizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, and safety glasses.
  • Manage inventory of painting supplies and equipment, notifying supervisors when new materials or tools need to be ordered to avoid project delays.
  • Provide excellent on-site customer service, professionally addressing any questions or concerns from clients throughout the duration of the project.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the training and mentoring of apprentice painters or painter's helpers on technique and safety.
  • Participate in regular team meetings to discuss project progress, safety topics, and best practices.
  • Provide constructive feedback on material quality and tool performance to help improve purchasing decisions.
  • Support job site setup and breakdown activities, including loading and unloading equipment and supplies.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in a painting or construction-related field.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 3-5 years of documented experience in professional residential and/or commercial painting.
