Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics on a diverse range of diesel and natural gas generator sets to accurately identify root causes of mechanical and electrical failures.
  • Execute major and minor engine repairs, including but not limited to, complete engine overhauls, fuel system servicing, cooling system repairs, and component replacement.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM) services according to manufacturer specifications and industry best practices, ensuring optimal equipment longevity and reliability.
  • Skillfully diagnose and repair issues within AC and DC control systems, including control panels, remote annunciators, and related power monitoring equipment.
  • Service, test, and repair Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and paralleling switchgear to ensure seamless power transition during utility outages.
  • Perform load bank testing on generator sets to verify operational readiness, engine performance, and alternator output under simulated full-load conditions.
  • Interpret complex electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to facilitate effective troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Respond to emergency service calls on a rotational, on-call basis to restore power to critical customer sites in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Utilize specialized diagnostic software and electronic tools to interface with engine and generator control modules for diagnostics, calibration, and parameter adjustments.
  • Perform start-up and commissioning services for newly installed power generation systems, ensuring they meet all performance and safety standards.
  • Methodically inspect, test, and maintain battery and charging systems to guarantee reliable starting capabilities of the generator set.
  • Evaluate and repair generator ends (alternators), including testing windings, replacing voltage regulators, and servicing diodes and bearings.
  • Prepare detailed and accurate service reports, timecards, and parts-request forms for every job, documenting all work performed, findings, and recommendations.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively with customers on-site to explain diagnoses, outline required repairs, and provide status updates.
  • Maintain a service vehicle in a clean, organized, and safe condition, while also managing an accurate inventory of parts and tools.
  • Strictly adhere to all company and customer safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), arc flash procedures, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Provide accurate estimations of time and materials required for proposed repairs to support the quoting process.
  • Address issues related to generator enclosures, fuel tanks, and exhaust systems, ensuring structural integrity and environmental compliance.
  • Calibrate and adjust engine operating parameters, such as speed and voltage, to meet the specific requirements of the connected load.
  • Conduct thorough site assessments to identify potential issues and make recommendations for system upgrades or operational improvements to enhance reliability.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to apprentice technicians, sharing technical knowledge and best practices.
  • Proactively identify and recommend additional service or parts to customers to prevent future breakdowns and enhance system performance.
  • Collaborate with the sales and parts departments to ensure seamless service delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Stay current with new product technology, manufacturer service bulletins, and evolving industry standards through continuous training and self-study.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel and natural gas industrial engines (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, MTU, Generac).
  • Strong ability to read, understand, and apply information from complex electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Expertise in the theory, operation, and repair of Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) and paralleling switchgear.
  • Competency with a wide array of diagnostic tools, including multimeters, meggers, load banks, and proprietary diagnostic software.
  • Thorough knowledge of AC/DC electrical theory, power generation principles, and the fundamentals of voltage regulation.
  • Familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC), particularly articles related to generator installation and safety.
  • Hands-on experience with engine control systems, PLCs, and modern electronic control modules.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of direct, hands-on experience as a generator field service technician.

Preferred: Factory-certified training from one or more major generator manufacturers (e.g., Cummins, Caterpillar, Kohler, Generac). Demonstrable experience working in critical power environments such as data centers, healthcare facilities, or telecommunications hubs is a significant advantage.
