Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly assist the Lead Glass Polisher in all aspects of finishing glass edges and surfaces to meet precise specifications.
  • Operate semi-automatic and manual polishing machines, including upright belt sanders, edge polishers, and hand-held grinders, under supervision.
  • Prepare glass for polishing by thoroughly cleaning surfaces, removing labels, and setting up pieces on polishing tables or machines.
  • Handle and carefully move large, heavy, and delicate sheets of glass between workstations, storage racks, and polishing equipment.
  • Perform initial quality checks on raw glass materials, identifying any scratches, chips, or defects prior to the polishing process.
  • Mix polishing compounds, cerium oxide slurries, and other solutions according to specific formulas and job requirements.
  • Set up and make minor adjustments to polishing machinery, including changing out polishing wheels, belts, and pads.
  • Carefully monitor the polishing process, observing machine operation and glass surfaces to ensure a consistent and high-quality finish.
  • Utilize various hand tools, including grinders, sanders, and specialized polishing tools, to manually remove imperfections and finish detailed areas.
  • Accurately read and interpret work orders, blueprints, and technical drawings to understand the required finish, dimensions, and specifications for each project.
  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and tape measures to verify that finished pieces meet dimensional tolerances.
  • Assist in removing deep scratches, scuffs, and other surface damage by applying the correct sequence of abrasive and polishing techniques.
  • Load and unload glass from automated edging and polishing lines, ensuring proper alignment and secure placement.
  • Apply protective films or coatings to finished glass surfaces to prevent damage during handling, storage, and transportation.
  • Perform final cleaning and detailing of the glass post-polishing to present a flawless, finished product ready for inspection or shipping.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area by sweeping floors, wiping down machinery, and properly storing tools and supplies.
  • Assist with the regular preventative maintenance of polishing equipment, including lubrication, cleaning, and replacement of worn parts.
  • Help manage the inventory of essential supplies, such as polishing pads, compounds, belts, and safety gear, and report when stock is low.
  • Diligently follow all company and industry safety protocols, including the consistent use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) like safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
  • Meticulously document work performed on job travelers or digital tracking systems, noting materials used and time spent on each task.
  • Communicate effectively with team leaders and other production staff regarding project status, equipment issues, or any quality concerns.
  • Carefully package finished glass products using appropriate materials to ensure they are secure and protected for shipping or further processing.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Materials Handling: Ability to safely lift, carry, and maneuver heavy and awkward glass panels, often with the assistance of another person or lifting equipment.
  • Hand & Power Tool Proficiency: Experience and comfort using various hand tools, grinders, sanders, and other fabrication equipment.
  • Machine Operation: Aptitude for learning to operate and make minor adjustments to specialized polishing and edging machinery.
  • Measurement Acumen: Skill in using tape measures, calipers, and other measuring devices to ensure work meets precise specifications.
  • Quality Inspection: Ability to spot minor imperfections, such as scratches, haze, chips, and swirls, on glass surfaces.
  • Blueprint & Work Order Interpretation: The capacity to read and understand technical documents to determine project requirements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or technical trade school.

  • Manufacturing or Fabrication

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years. This is an entry-level position where we provide on-the-job training.

Preferred: Some prior experience in a manufacturing, construction, or general labor environment where physical work and use of tools was required is a definite plus.
