Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough inspections of damaged vehicle glass to accurately assess whether a repair or a full replacement is the appropriate course of action for customer safety and cost-effectiveness.
  • Execute high-quality windshield, side glass, and rear glass replacements on a wide variety of domestic and foreign vehicle makes and models, adhering to strict AGRSS (Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard).
  • Perform rock chip and crack repairs using industry-approved resins and specialized tools, skillfully restoring the structural integrity and visual clarity of the original windshield.
  • Carry out static and dynamic Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) recalibrations following a windshield replacement, ensuring safety features like lane-keeping assist and forward collision alerts function correctly.
  • Communicate directly and professionally with customers, walking them through the service process, explaining the work performed, and providing clear instructions on safe drive-away times.
  • Manage and maintain a mobile service vehicle, ensuring it is consistently clean, organized, and fully stocked with the necessary glass, tools, adhesives, and materials for the day's appointments.
  • Process all work orders, customer invoices, and insurance documentation accurately and in a timely manner, often using a company-provided tablet or mobile device.
  • Select the correct glass and molding parts for each specific vehicle from inventory, verifying part numbers and inspecting for any defects prior to beginning the installation.
  • Apply urethane adhesive systems with precision, carefully considering ambient temperature and humidity to ensure a strong, permanent bond and guarantee a leak-free seal.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve common related issues, such as malfunctioning window regulators or motors, to provide a complete and satisfactory service to the customer.
  • Uphold an unwavering commitment to safety by consistently using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and following all company and industry safety protocols.
  • Prepare the customer's vehicle for service by carefully placing protective coverings on the fenders, dashboard, and seats to prevent any damage during the repair process.
  • Remove the old or damaged glass using specialized tools like wire-out systems or power cutting tools, taking care to avoid any damage to the vehicle's paint or bonding surfaces.
  • Clean and prime the vehicle's pinchweld and the new glass to promote proper adhesion, which is a critical step for a safe and durable installation.
  • Re-install any attached components such as rearview mirrors, rain sensors, heads-up displays (HUD), and various trim pieces after the new glass has been set.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and a positive, helpful attitude when interacting with customers, as you are a direct representative of the company's brand and commitment to quality.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest vehicle models, glass technologies, and installation techniques by actively participating in ongoing training and certification programs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the shop or service center, contributing to a safe and efficient work environment for the entire team.
  • Support inventory management by assisting with stock counts, receiving and unpacking shipments, and organizing glass and supplies in the warehouse.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Auto Glass Installation/Repair: Proven ability to remove and install vehicle glass, as well as perform high-quality chip repairs.
  • Tool Proficiency: Expertise in using specialized auto glass tools, including cold knives, power tools, wire-out systems, and urethane applicators.
  • ADAS Recalibration: Competency in using diagnostic scanners and calibration targets to recalibrate vehicle safety systems post-replacement.
  • Material Knowledge: Strong understanding of different urethane adhesive systems, primers, and their specific cure time requirements (Safe Drive-Away Time).
  • Vehicle Systems Knowledge: Familiarity with different vehicle makes/models and their associated glass parts, trim, and electronic components.

Educational Background

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of direct experience as an Auto Glass Technician. While experience is preferred, many organizations offer comprehensive trainee programs for candidates with strong mechanical aptitude and a great attitude.

Preferred: 3+ years of professional experience, with demonstrated proficiency in ADAS recalibration. Certification from the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) is highly desirable and often a mark of a top-tier technician.
