Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Drive the entire design process from initial concept, seasonal mood boards, and hand sketching to final product commercialization.
  • Conduct in-depth market research and ethnographic studies to identify emerging trends, new technologies, consumer needs, and competitor product strategies.
  • Create original and innovative glove designs through 2D digital rendering (Adobe Illustrator) and, increasingly, 3D modeling (e.g., CLO3D, Browzwear).
  • Develop comprehensive and highly detailed technical specification packages (tech packs) that meticulously outline construction methods, materials, measurements, and artwork for factory execution.
  • Select, test, and specify all materials, including leathers, synthetics, insulation, waterproof membranes, and trims, ensuring they meet performance, sustainability, and cost targets.
  • Collaborate closely with Product Line Managers to ensure designs are commercially viable and align with the overall brand strategy, category direction, and business objectives.
  • Create and meticulously manage the Bill of Materials (BOM) for each design, partnering with the development team to achieve target costs and margins.
  • Lead prototype and sample review sessions, providing clear, concise, and actionable feedback to factory partners on fit, function, construction, and overall aesthetics.
  • Refine and perfect glove patterns to ensure optimal anatomical fit, dexterity, and comfort across a full range of sizes, often involving direct hands-on adjustments.
  • Communicate daily with overseas vendors and factories to manage the sampling process, troubleshoot production issues, and ensure strict adherence to the development calendar.
  • Partner with the materials innovation team to research and integrate new materials and construction technologies that provide a competitive advantage.
  • Create and deliver compelling design presentations to internal stakeholders, including leadership, sales, and marketing teams, to build consensus and excitement for new products.

  • Travel to manufacturing facilities (both domestic and international) to oversee production starts, resolve quality issues, and build strong, collaborative partner relationships.
  • Organize and participate in rigorous product wear-testing and feedback sessions with target end-users (e.g., athletes, professionals) to gather qualitative data for design validation.
  • Ensure all products are designed to meet or exceed industry-specific performance and safety standards where applicable (e.g., CE, ANSI, NFPA).
  • Maintain all product-related data, revisions, and communication history within the company's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
  • Develop seasonal color palettes and manage the color-matching (lab dip) process for all materials and components.
  • Analyze competitor products through physical teardowns and functional assessments to benchmark performance, features, and construction methods.
  • Work directly with the quality assurance team to establish clear product quality standards and final inspection protocols.

Secondary Functions

  • Support marketing and sales teams by providing design insights, product stories, and visual assets for go-to-market materials.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of the design and development process, tools, and operational calendars.
  • Collaborate with the broader design organization on overarching seasonal themes, brand stories, and cross-category initiatives.
  • Participate in industry trade shows, seminars, and material fairs to stay at the forefront of new technologies and manufacturing trends.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator and Photoshop, for creating technical drawings and renderings.
  • Strong, demonstrable understanding of glove-specific pattern making, grading, and complex construction techniques.
  • In-depth knowledge of technical materials, including performance textiles, leathers, synthetic leathers, laminates, and insulation.
  • Proven ability to create and manage enterprise-level tech packs and Bill of Materials (BOMs) with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Experience working within a Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software environment (e.g., Centric, FlexPLM).
  • Proficiency in 2D and/or 3D CAD software (e.g., CLO3D, Browzwear, SolidWorks) is highly desired and becoming a standard.
  • Excellent hand-sketching, illustration, and visual communication abilities to quickly convey ideas.
  • A strong understanding of product costing, manufacturing processes, and supply chain logistics.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
