Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute the complete setup and makeready process for folding and gluing equipment according to detailed job specifications, including adjusting guides, feeder, and delivery components.
- Meticulously review and interpret job tickets, production orders, and layout sheets to fully understand project requirements, including glue patterns, fold configurations, and quantity.
- Set up and operate electronic glue systems, ensuring precise application of cold or hot-melt adhesives to designated areas of the product.
- Perform complex makeready procedures, ensuring all machine components, including feeders, pre-breakers, folding sections, and delivery systems, are perfectly aligned for optimal run speed and quality.
- Continuously monitor machine operations throughout the entire production run, making fine-tuned adjustments to speed, glue application, and folding mechanisms to maintain consistency and prevent defects.
- Conduct rigorous quality control checks at startup and regular intervals, inspecting finished products for proper adhesion, accurate folding, print defects, and compliance with all customer specifications.
- Utilize measuring tools such as rulers, gauges, and calipers to verify that product dimensions are within specified tolerances.
- Troubleshoot and resolve common machine stoppages and quality issues on the fly, such as jams, mis-feeds, and inconsistent glue application, to minimize downtime.
- Efficiently manage the flow of materials to and from the machine, ensuring a steady supply of raw stock and proper handling of finished, glued products.
- Perform routine operator-level preventative maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, and replacing worn parts like belts and guides to ensure machine reliability.
- Accurately record production data, including run times, quantities produced, waste counts, and any downtime, using either manual logs or a computer-based system.
- Adjust and fine-tune machine sections to properly form straight-line, auto-bottom, and 4/6 corner carton styles as required by the job.
- Collaborate effectively with die-cutting and printing departments to understand the characteristics of incoming materials and anticipate potential running issues.
- Mount and adjust forming accessories, such as squaring devices and pressure belts, in the delivery section to ensure cartons are properly squared and bonded.
- Maintain a high level of awareness for safety protocols, ensuring all machine guards are in place and operational and adhering to lock-out/tag-out procedures.
- Direct and guide the activities of a Packer or Finishing Helper assigned to the machine, ensuring they are packing the product correctly and assisting with quality checks.
- Identify and segregate any non-conforming or defective products, communicating quality issues to a supervisor or the quality assurance department promptly.
- Optimize machine speeds to balance a high rate of production with the highest possible quality output, avoiding defects caused by excessive speed.
- Read and understand the master carton packing instructions to ensure the finished product is layered and packed correctly for shipping.
- Take responsibility for the overall cleanliness and organization of the machine and the surrounding work area, contributing to a safe and efficient environment.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the training and development of new machine helpers and junior operators, sharing knowledge and best practices.
- Participate in departmental continuous improvement meetings and actively suggest process enhancements for safety, quality, or efficiency.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to 5S or similar workplace organization principles to improve workflow.
- Collaborate with the maintenance team to communicate and help troubleshoot complex mechanical or electrical issues.
