Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist in the safe and efficient loading and unloading of goods, freight, and materials onto and off transport vehicles, utilizing equipment like hand trucks, pallet jacks, and dollies.
  • Meticulously arrange and secure cargo within the truck or trailer, applying knowledge of weight distribution, load balancing, and using straps, braces, and padding to prevent shifting and damage during transit.
  • Accompany the primary driver on designated local or regional delivery routes, providing essential support to meet tight schedules and delivery windows.
  • Provide navigational assistance using maps, GPS devices, and local knowledge to help plot the most efficient routes and circumvent traffic congestion or road closures.
  • Serve as a professional and courteous point of contact for the company during interactions with clients, warehouse staff, and receivers at drop-off locations.
  • Carefully verify shipping-related documentation, such as bills of lading, packing slips, and delivery orders, ensuring that the items being loaded or unloaded match the paperwork precisely.
  • Obtain necessary signatures, payment, and a printed name on all required paperwork upon successful delivery, ensuring all documentation is complete and legible.
  • Diligently inspect goods for any visible signs of damage or defects during the loading and unloading process, and report any discrepancies or issues to the driver and dispatcher immediately.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with the dispatch team, providing real-time updates on location, delivery status, potential delays, or any on-the-ground issues.
  • Adhere rigorously to all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and company-wide safety policies, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Assist the driver in performing mandatory pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, checking tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels to ensure the vehicle is safe for operation.
  • Maintain constant vigilance for potential hazards on the road and at delivery sites, acting as a second set of eyes for the driver, especially during backing and maneuvering in tight spaces.
  • Manage the physical transfer of goods from the vehicle to the customer's designated storage area, which may involve navigating stairs, tight corridors, or uneven terrain.
  • Operate liftgates and other vehicle-mounted mechanical equipment safely and proficiently to facilitate the movement of heavy or bulky items.
  • Ensure all delivery equipment, such as hand trucks, straps, and blankets, is properly maintained, secured in the vehicle, and accounted for at the end of each shift.
  • Collect, sort, and organize empty containers, pallets, and other shipping materials from customer sites for return to the distribution center.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by addressing client questions politely, resolving minor delivery issues on the spot, or escalating more complex problems to the appropriate channel.
  • Handle any specialized or fragile cargo with extreme care, following specific handling instructions to guarantee its integrity upon arrival.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and debris-free environment within the vehicle's cab and cargo areas to promote safety and efficiency.
  • Prepare and submit accurate, detailed reports at the end of the day, summarizing deliveries completed, mileage, and any notable incidents.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide support in the warehouse or distribution center during off-peak hours or downtime, assisting with order picking, packing, and shipment preparation.
  • Assist with routine cleaning and basic maintenance of the transport vehicle, including washing the exterior and interior and replenishing essential supplies.
  • Participate in mandatory safety training sessions and team meetings to stay current with company policies, procedures, and industry best practices.
  • Help maintain an accurate inventory of supplies on the truck, such as paperwork, a tool kit, and safety equipment, reporting when items need to be restocked.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Material Handling: Proficient in operating manual and electric pallet jacks, hand trucks, dollies, and other non-motorized warehouse equipment.
  • Load Securement: Knowledge of proper techniques for strapping, bracing, tarping, and securing diverse types of freight to prevent movement and damage.
  • Safe Lifting Practices: Demonstrated ability to consistently use proper body mechanics and safe lifting techniques for heavy and awkward objects.
