Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Serve as a primary point of contact at the public counter, over the phone, and via email, providing clear and accurate information to citizens, contractors, and developers regarding zoning ordinances, land use policies, and development application procedures.
  • Conduct initial intake and review of a variety of planning applications, including site plans, zoning permits, conditional use permits, and subdivision plats, for completeness and compliance with submission requirements.
  • Perform detailed data entry and maintain comprehensive planning databases, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of information related to land use applications, project statuses, zoning codes, and demographic statistics.
  • Assist Senior Planners with extensive research and data compilation for the development and amendment of comprehensive plans, neighborhood plans, and other long-range planning initiatives.
  • Prepare and draft routine staff reports, official correspondence, and public notices for Planning Commission meetings, Board of Adjustment hearings, and City/County Council sessions.
  • Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to create, update, and maintain planning-related maps, exhibits, and spatial data layers for analysis and public presentation.
  • Review building permit applications and business license requests for basic conformance with zoning district regulations, including setbacks, land use, and parking requirements.
  • Conduct on-site field investigations and inspections to gather data, document existing conditions, verify site plan details, and ensure compliance with approved plans and ordinances.
  • Assist in the preparation of visually engaging presentation materials, including PowerPoint slides, charts, graphics, and maps, for use in public meetings and staff briefings.
  • Maintain and organize official planning files, records, and historical documents in both digital and physical formats, ensuring proper record-keeping and public accessibility.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide essential administrative and clerical support to the Planning Department, including scheduling meetings, preparing meeting agendas and minutes, and managing departmental correspondence.
  • Calculate and process fees for various planning applications, permits, and reviews, ensuring accurate financial transactions and record-keeping.
  • Assist in the logistical coordination of public hearings and community outreach events, including venue setup, material preparation, and attendee sign-in.
  • Monitor project timelines and application statuses within permit tracking software, providing updates to applicants and internal staff as needed.
  • Support Senior Planners in reviewing environmental documents and studies for compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Help maintain and update the Planning Department's section of the government website with current forms, documents, meeting schedules, and public information.
  • Participate in inter-departmental meetings to coordinate planning review with other divisions such as Public Works, Engineering, and Building Safety.
  • Conduct research on planning best practices, innovative zoning techniques, and legislative changes in other jurisdictions to support policy development.
  • Assist in responding to public records requests related to planning documents, applications, and historical property information in a timely and thorough manner.
  • Perform initial analysis of demographic, economic, and land use data using spreadsheet and database software to identify trends and support planning reports.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
