Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive and systematic literature reviews to synthesize existing knowledge, identify research gaps, and inform the theoretical framework of new studies.
  • Design, develop, and execute complex research protocols and experiments in alignment with the project's objectives, often requiring innovative problem-solving.
  • Meticulously collect, record, and manage qualitative and/or quantitative data, ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and confidentiality of all information.
  • Perform advanced statistical analysis on complex datasets using relevant software, interpret the results, and draw meaningful conclusions to address research questions.
  • Prepare, write, and edit research findings for publication in high-impact, peer-reviewed academic journals, contributing significantly to manuscript drafts.
  • Develop and deliver compelling presentations of research findings at local, national, and international scientific conferences, symposia, and workshops.
  • Actively contribute to the writing and preparation of grant proposals and funding applications to secure financial support for ongoing and future research projects.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain sophisticated laboratory instruments and technical equipment, troubleshooting any issues that may arise during experimentation.
  • Develop, test, and implement new computational models, software, or analytical tools to enhance the research capabilities of the team.
  • Mentor, train, and provide daily guidance to undergraduate students or junior team members, fostering a collaborative and supportive lab environment.
  • Ensure strict adherence to all university, state, and federal regulations regarding research ethics, safety protocols, and responsible conduct of research.
  • Maintain a detailed and organized laboratory notebook or digital record of all experimental procedures, raw data, and analytical results for reproducibility.
  • Collaborate closely with the Principal Investigator, postdoctoral fellows, and other researchers to define project milestones and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Critically analyze and troubleshoot unexpected experimental outcomes or data inconsistencies, proposing and implementing corrective actions.
  • Stay current with the latest scientific advancements, methodologies, and technical developments in the relevant field of study through continuous learning.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage and organize research inventories, including ordering and stocking laboratory supplies, reagents, and other essential materials.
  • Assist in the preparation of teaching materials, presentations, and laboratory exercises for undergraduate or graduate-level courses taught by the PI.
  • Actively participate in and contribute to regular lab meetings, journal clubs, and departmental seminars to foster intellectual exchange.
  • Handle various administrative tasks related to the research project, such as coordinating with university administrative offices or managing participant scheduling.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis.
  • Contribute to the lab's long-term data management, storage, and sharing strategy to ensure data accessibility and preservation.
  • Collaborate with principal investigators and other researchers to translate broad research questions into specific, testable experimental designs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Statistical Analysis: Proficiency in using statistical software packages such as R, SPSS, Stata, or SAS for complex data analysis and modeling.
  • Programming & Scripting: Competency in a programming language relevant to the field, such as Python (with Pandas, NumPy), MATLAB, or C++.
