Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Provide highly effective one-on-one and small-group tutoring sessions to graduate and undergraduate students, tailoring instructional methods to meet diverse learning styles and academic needs.
  • Assist students in developing a comprehensive understanding of complex course concepts, theoretical frameworks, and advanced subject matter.
  • Guide students through challenging homework assignments, complex problem sets, research papers, and capstone projects, focusing on building independent problem-solving abilities.
  • Design and lead targeted exam review sessions and preparatory workshops, focusing on key concepts, effective test-taking strategies, and time management skills to boost student performance.
  • Foster the development of high-level critical thinking and analytical skills by engaging students in thought-provoking discussions and challenging their assumptions.
  • Provide clear, constructive, and actionable feedback on students' written work, presentations, and research, with a focus on improving argumentation, clarity, structure, and proper citation.
  • Act as a mentor and academic role model, sharing insights about graduate school expectations, research methodologies, and professional standards within the field.
  • Promote and model exceptional study habits, advanced time management techniques, and effective organizational strategies essential for graduate-level success.
  • Maintain detailed, confidential, and accurate records of all tutoring appointments, tracking student progress, and noting areas for further development.
  • Adapt tutoring strategies and communication styles to effectively support a diverse student population, including international students, adult learners, and students with varying academic backgrounds.
  • Cultivate a professional, encouraging, and inclusive learning atmosphere where students feel safe to ask questions, make mistakes, and engage in rigorous intellectual exploration.
  • Stay meticulously up-to-date with the curriculum, required texts, and academic expectations for the specific courses being supported to ensure tutoring is relevant and impactful.
  • Uphold and enforce all university policies on academic integrity, actively promoting ethical scholarly practices and discouraging plagiarism or academic dishonesty.
  • Proactively identify students who may be struggling and reach out to offer support, guidance, and encouragement in a compassionate manner.
  • Skillfully manage appointment scheduling, cancellations, and student communications in a timely and professional manner using designated platforms.

Secondary Functions

  • Develop and create supplementary learning materials, including practice problems, detailed study guides, instructional handouts, and video tutorials to reinforce classroom concepts.
  • Collaborate closely with course professors and academic advisors to align tutoring strategies with course objectives and to create a cohesive support network for at-risk students.
  • Assist the program coordinator in assessing the effectiveness of tutoring services by collecting student feedback, analyzing data, and contributing to program improvement reports.
  • Lead and facilitate specialized academic skills workshops on topics such as graduate-level writing, research methodologies, data analysis software, or presentation skills.
  • Refer students to other campus support services, such as the Writing Center, Career Services, or Counseling and Psychological Services, when their needs extend beyond academic tutoring.
  • Participate actively in mandatory training sessions and ongoing professional development opportunities to continuously refine tutoring techniques and pedagogical approaches.
  • Contribute to the recruitment and training of new tutors by sharing best practices and serving as a peer mentor.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

A completed Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution in a field directly relevant to the tutoring subject. Must have a strong academic record.

Preferred Education:

Currently enrolled in or have successfully completed a Master's or Doctoral (PhD) program.
