Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate conveyance equipment such as augers, belts, and elevators to safely and efficiently transfer grain to and from storage bins, trucks, and railcars.
  • Skillfully manage the loading of outbound grain shipments, ensuring accurate weight distribution and compliance with all customer, company, and transportation regulations.
  • Systematically unload inbound grain from trucks and railcars, directing it to the correct storage bins based on type, grade, and quality characteristics.
  • Conduct routine quality assurance tests on grain samples, including checking moisture content, test weight, and foreign material to ensure it meets specified standards.
  • Perform daily pre-shift inspections on all mobile and stationary equipment to verify operational readiness and identify potential safety or maintenance issues.
  • Meticulously document all grain movements, quality checks, and shipping/receiving activities using facility software or manual logs to maintain accurate inventory records.
  • Proactively monitor all grain handling and storage systems during operation to detect any malfunctions or blockages and take appropriate corrective action.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and OSHA safety protocols, including lock-out/tag-out procedures, confined space entry, and the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and organization throughout the facility, performing regular housekeeping duties such as sweeping, shoveling, and managing dust to prevent hazards.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with truck drivers, team members, and supervisors to coordinate the flow of traffic and materials on-site.
  • Operate facility scales to accurately weigh inbound and outbound trucks and railcars, generating precise scale tickets for record-keeping.
  • Assist in the process of blending different types and grades of grain to meet specific customer orders and quality specifications.
  • Visually inspect inbound and stored grain for signs of spoilage, infestation, or damage, and report any findings to management immediately.
  • Safely operate mobile equipment, such as skid steers, front-end loaders, or manlifts, for various tasks including cleanup and minor maintenance.
  • Actively participate in all required safety training sessions and drills to maintain a high level of preparedness and a safety-first culture.
  • Provide support during facility shutdowns for major cleaning, maintenance, and repair activities, working collaboratively with the maintenance team.
  • Monitor and manage dust control systems to ensure they are functioning effectively, minimizing airborne particulates and reducing explosion risks.
  • Guide and direct truck traffic within the facility grounds to ensure a safe and organized flow of vehicles to and from the loading and unloading pits.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of different grain types, their characteristics, and the official USDA grain grading standards.
  • Respond promptly to alarms or emergency situations, following established procedures to ensure the safety of personnel and the protection of assets.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance team with basic preventative maintenance tasks and minor repairs on conveyance and processing equipment.
  • Contribute to inventory management by participating in regular bin measurements and physical inventory counts.
  • Support other facility departments and personnel as needed to ensure overall operational efficiency and meet business goals.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for enhancing safety, quality, and productivity.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating grain handling equipment, including conveyors, augers, and elevators, as well as mobile equipment like skid steers.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: A solid understanding of basic mechanical principles to identify equipment issues and assist with minor maintenance.
  • Basic Mathematics: Ability to perform calculations for weighing, blending, and record-keeping with accuracy.
  • Grain Quality Assessment: Knowledge of procedures for sampling and testing grain for moisture, test weight, and foreign material.

Experience Requirements
