Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate all grain handling equipment, including elevator legs, drag conveyors, belts, and distributors, to safely and efficiently receive, transfer, and load out grain.
  • Perform official grain grading by obtaining representative samples and accurately testing for key factors such as moisture content, test weight, damage, and foreign material.
  • Direct the movement and positioning of commercial trucks and railcars for loading and unloading, ensuring proper spotting, securement, and communication with drivers.
  • Diligently monitor the condition of stored grain by checking temperatures and visually inspecting for any signs of spoilage or insect activity, and taking corrective actions as needed.
  • Operate sophisticated computerized control systems to manage and optimize grain flow, binning strategies, and real-time inventory tracking throughout the elevator facility.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance, lubrication, and minor repairs on equipment like conveyors, augers, and spouts to minimize downtime and ensure operational readiness.
  • Maintain an exemplary standard of facility cleanliness and housekeeping in all areas, including tunnels, towers, and grounds, to ensure a safe, compliant, and professional work environment.
  • Execute specific grain blending strategies as directed by the management team to meet precise customer quality requirements and fulfill contract specifications.
  • Accurately weigh and document all inbound and outbound grain shipments, generating scale tickets and meticulously entering data into the inventory management system.
  • Adhere strictly to all company and government safety regulations, including OSHA standards for grain handling, confined space entry, fall protection, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
  • Operate various types of mobile equipment, such as front-end loaders, skid steers, and forklifts, to move grain, ingredients, and materials safely within the facility.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with farmers, truck drivers, and fellow team members to coordinate a smooth and efficient flow of traffic and commodities.
  • Perform pre-shift inspections and safety checks on all assigned equipment to proactively identify and report any potential mechanical issues or safety hazards.
  • Operate and monitor grain drying equipment, carefully managing moisture levels and temperatures to achieve target specifications without compromising grain quality.
  • Load railcars and trucks to their legal weight limits, ensuring proper grain distribution within the vessel to prevent product shifting during transit.
  • Assist in the application of grain protectants or fumigants as required, following all safety protocols and procedures under the supervision of a licensed applicator.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate operational logs, including equipment usage reports, maintenance records, and grain quality data for compliance and auditing purposes.
  • Respond to and troubleshoot alarms from the facility’s control systems, diagnosing operational issues and implementing solutions to restore normal function.
  • Participate actively in regular safety training sessions, team meetings, and emergency drills, demonstrating a strong commitment to a zero-incident workplace culture.
  • Support the loading and handling of other agricultural products as needed, such as feed or fertilizer, demonstrating flexibility across different operational departments.
  • Perform grounds maintenance duties, including mowing, trimming, and snow removal, to ensure the facility is accessible, safe, and professional in appearance.
  • Assist in managing and reconciling grain inventory through regular bin measurements, physical counts, and cross-referencing system data to ensure accuracy.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with customer service, professionally interacting with farmers and truck drivers during deliveries and pickups.
  • Actively participate in regular safety committee meetings and contribute valuable insights to enhance the facility's culture of safety.
  • Support larger facility maintenance projects, capital improvements, and repair initiatives, particularly during off-peak seasons.
  • Contribute to periodic inventory counts and reconciliation processes to ensure financial and operational accuracy.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Grain Grading & Sampling: Proficiency in using probes and testing equipment to accurately assess grain quality (moisture, test weight, etc.).
  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Skilled in operating front-end loaders, skid steers, forklifts, and other mobile equipment in a busy environment.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to perform routine preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor equipment issues, and assist with repairs.
  • Computerized Control Systems: Experience or ability to learn operating automated systems for grain handling and inventory management.
  • OSHA & Safety Compliance: Strong knowledge of grain handling safety standards, including confined space entry, LOTO, and fall protection.
  • Scale & Weighing System Operation: Competency in operating truck scales and accurately documenting weights for inbound and outbound shipments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

  • Associate's Degree or a technical certificate in a relevant field.

  • Agriculture or Agribusiness
  • Mechanics or Industrial Maintenance

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-3 years of experience in a related field.

Preferred:
Previous experience in a grain elevator, farm operation, or a similar industrial or manufacturing setting is highly desirable. Candidates with a demonstrated mechanical aptitude and a strong commitment to safety will be given priority consideration. On-the-job training will be provided for the right candidate who demonstrates a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn.
