Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate grain handling equipment, including but not limited to conveyors, augers, and elevator legs, to safely and efficiently transfer grain between storage and transportation units.
  • Conduct thorough grading and inspections of all inbound and outbound grain shipments, accurately assessing quality factors such as moisture content, test weight, and foreign material.
  • Skillfully direct and position commercial trucks and railcars to ensure proper alignment for safe and efficient loading and unloading procedures.
  • Obtain representative grain samples from various depths and locations within trucks, railcars, and storage bins using approved probing techniques.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all grain movements, quality data, and bin inventories using the facility's designated software and/or manual logbooks.
  • Perform rigorous and consistent cleaning and housekeeping duties throughout the elevator, tunnels, grounds, and on all equipment to mitigate dust and ensure a safe, compliant work environment.
  • Accurately read and interpret bin charts and digital monitoring systems to gauge inventory levels and track commodity locations within the facility.
  • Execute grain blending strategies as directed by the facility manager to meet specific quality and grade requirements for customer contracts.
  • Operate certified scales and weighing systems to capture and document precise weights for all inbound and outbound grain shipments.
    ⚫ Monitor all operational equipment for any unusual noises, vibrations, or signs of malfunction, reporting potential issues to maintenance or management promptly.
  • Assist in the regular inspection and preventative maintenance of facility equipment, which includes tasks like lubrication, adjusting belts, and performing other minor repairs.
  • Verify that all safety guards, emergency stops, and hazard-monitoring systems are fully functional and in their proper place before operating any machinery.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental standards to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of the entire team.
  • Perform bin entry procedures in full compliance with the facility's confined space entry program when required for cleaning, inspection, or maintenance.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide courteous and professional customer service to producers and drivers, effectively communicating procedures and directing traffic flow.
  • Assist with seasonal preparations for the facility, such as conducting pre-harvest maintenance checks and executing post-harvest shutdown and clean-out protocols.
  • Actively participate in all scheduled safety meetings, hands-on training sessions, and team briefings to maintain and enhance knowledge of best practices.
  • Support the facility's inventory control program by assisting with physical inventory measurements, counts, and data reconciliation.
  • Perform general groundskeeping and facility maintenance duties, which may include mowing, weed control, snow removal, and painting to maintain a professional and safe site.
  • Assist dedicated maintenance personnel with more complex repairs and projects by providing support, retrieving tools, and ensuring work areas are clean and safe.
  • Engage in cross-training opportunities for other facility roles to provide operational flexibility and support during peak seasons or staff absences.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Equipment Operation: Ability to operate grain handling machinery like conveyors, augers, and grain elevator legs.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Basic understanding of mechanical systems for troubleshooting and assisting with preventative maintenance.
  • Grain Sampling & Grading: Proficiency in using grain probes and understanding the basics of USDA/FGIS grading standards.
  • Computer Literacy: Basic skills in using computer systems or tablets for data entry, accessing records, and managing inventory.
  • Safety Protocol Knowledge: Familiarity with core safety procedures, especially Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and confined space awareness.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of experience in a related field.

Preferred: Previous experience in a grain elevator, feed mill, farm operation, or a similar industrial/agricultural environment is highly valued but not always required for a candidate with a strong mechanical aptitude and work ethic.
