A Gravel Operator is a skilled professional at the heart of the construction and materials industry. This role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy machinery and stationary plant equipment used to excavate, process, and stockpile sand, gravel, and other aggregates. More than just an equipment operator, this individual acts as a steward of quality control, equipment maintenance, and worksite safety. They ensure that the raw materials used to build our roads, bridges, and buildings are produced to precise specifications, making this a foundational role in infrastructure development.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and proficiently operate heavy mobile equipment, including front-end loaders, haul trucks, and excavators, to move and transport raw materials from the quarry pit to the processing plant.
  • Manage the end-to-end operation of crushing and screening plants, carefully adjusting equipment settings to produce various aggregate products that meet precise customer and engineering specifications.
  • Conduct thorough pre-shift and post-shift safety and operational inspections on all assigned equipment, meticulously documenting findings and reporting any maintenance or safety concerns to ensure a safe working environment.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on plant machinery, such as greasing fittings, checking fluid levels, and cleaning components, to maximize equipment uptime and prevent costly breakdowns.
  • Monitor all plant systems from a control room or on the ground, reading gauges, dials, and computer screens to ensure all equipment is operating within normal and safe parameters.
  • Take an active role in quality control by obtaining material samples and performing basic tests (e.g., sieve analysis) to verify that the final product meets required gradation and quality standards.
  • Safely identify and clear blockages or jams within crushers, screens, and conveyor systems, always adhering to strict Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Maintain constant communication with other team members, including fellow operators, ground crew, and supervisors, using a two-way radio to coordinate material flow and ensure operational safety.
  • Operate a water truck or fixed sprinkler systems for effective dust suppression on haul roads and throughout the plant area, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose minor operational or mechanical issues with the plant equipment, making small adjustments and repairs or clearly articulating complex problems to the maintenance team.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company safety protocols and government regulations, with a specific focus on MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) standards for the mining and aggregate industry.
  • Accurately complete all required daily paperwork, including production reports, equipment inspection forms, safety logs, and maintenance records.
  • Assist the dedicated maintenance team during larger repair jobs, such as replacing screen decks, crusher wear parts, and conveyor belts.
  • Skillfully manage and organize stockpiles of various finished aggregate products, ensuring there is no cross-contamination and that piles are stable and safe.
  • Load finished materials onto customer trucks or rail cars, ensuring proper weight distribution and adherence to legal load limits.
  • Actively participate in all safety meetings, toolbox talks, and ongoing training programs to continuously improve safety awareness and operational knowledge.
  • Maintain excellent housekeeping in and around the plant, control room, and other work areas to prevent slip, trip, and fall hazards.
  • Operate all machinery with a focus on efficiency, aiming to conserve fuel and minimize wear and tear while maximizing production output.
  • Proactively identify potential hazards, unsafe conditions, or opportunities for process improvement and communicate them effectively to the site leadership.
  • Perform physical tasks as required, which may include shoveling spillage, using hand tools for cleanup, and navigating stairs and catwalks throughout the plant.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist maintenance teams with routine repairs and preventative maintenance tasks on plant machinery.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including housekeeping of the plant, control rooms, and surrounding areas to ensure a safe and efficient worksite.
  • Contribute to the site's overall safety culture by mentoring newer employees on safe operating procedures.
  • Participate in inventory counts and stockpile measurements as requested by management.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Heavy Equipment Operation: Proven proficiency in operating front-end loaders, haul trucks, and similar mobile equipment in a production environment.
  • Aggregate Plant Systems: Strong understanding of the operation of crushers (jaw, cone, impact), screens, and conveyor systems.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: The ability to understand how machinery works, diagnose basic mechanical problems, and perform minor maintenance and repairs.
    -MSHA/OSHA Regulations: Deep knowledge of and commitment to safety standards, particularly MSHA regulations specific to surface mining operations.
  • Quality Control Principles: Familiarity with aggregate testing procedures, such as sampling and gradation analysis, to ensure product specifications are met.
  • Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO): Certified or demonstrable experience in applying LOTO procedures to ensure equipment is de-energized during maintenance.
  • Basic Welding/Fabrication: Skills in welding or torch cutting for minor repairs are highly desirable.
  • Computer & Control Panel Literacy: Comfort with using computer-based control systems to monitor and operate the plant.
  • Record Keeping: Diligence in accurately filling out logs, reports, and inspection forms.
  • Troubleshooting: The ability to systematically identify the root cause of an operational or mechanical problem.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of experience operating heavy mobile equipment.

Preferred: 1-2+ years of experience working directly in a sand and gravel, quarry, or aggregate processing plant environment is strongly preferred. An active MSHA Part 46 or Part 48 certification is highly advantageous.
