Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the complete makeready and setup process for the gravure press, including installing and aligning engraved cylinders, doctor blades, and impression rollers according to job ticket specifications.
  • Skillfully manage and prepare inks for production runs, involving precise color matching, viscosity measurement and adjustment, and maintaining ink levels in fountains throughout the process.
  • Operate the gravure press controls to manage run speed, tension, temperature, and registration, consistently optimizing for maximum efficiency while upholding strict quality standards.
  • Conduct continuous and rigorous in-process quality checks for print defects, color consistency, print-to-print registration, and overall adherence to customer-approved proofs.
  • Utilize quality control instruments, such as spectrophotometers, densitometers, and strobe lights, to quantitatively measure and verify print quality throughout the production run.
  • Interpret complex job orders, dockets, and technical specifications to ensure all production requirements, materials, and finishing processes are correctly implemented.
  • Perform routine and preventative maintenance on the press, including cleaning cylinders, lubricating moving parts, and replacing worn components like doctor blades to ensure peak operational performance.
  • Proactively troubleshoot and resolve press-related mechanical, electrical, and quality issues in real-time to minimize downtime and material waste.
  • Safely handle, mount, and manage heavy print cylinders and material rolls, often utilizing overhead cranes or other material handling equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed production records, including run times, material usage, waste tracking, and quality control documentation, often using a plant management software system.
  • Direct and mentor a team of Press Helpers and Assistants, delegating tasks related to material staging, ink preparation, and post-press cleanup to ensure a smooth workflow.
  • Ensure all safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe chemical handling, are strictly followed at all times.
  • Monitor the web (substrate) for proper alignment, tension, and any defects, making necessary adjustments to the web guide systems.
  • Manage the solvent/ink chemistry and exhaust systems to ensure environmental compliance and safe operating conditions within the pressroom.
  • Collaborate closely with the Quality Assurance department to resolve any non-conformance issues and implement corrective actions for future runs.
  • Set up and manage in-line processes such as lamination, die-cutting, or coating if the press is so equipped.

Secondary Functions

  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting process enhancements to improve safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
  • Assist the maintenance team in diagnosing more complex mechanical or electrical failures on the press.
  • Train new Press Helpers or Apprentice Operators on fundamental press operations, safety procedures, and quality checks.
  • Manage inventory of press-side consumables, such as inks, solvents, doctor blades, and cleaning supplies, and communicate replenishment needs.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Gravure Press Operation: Proven expertise in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting multi-color rotogravure presses (e.g., Bobst, Cerutti, Windmoeller & Hoelscher).
  • Color Matching & Theory: Exceptional ability to visually and instrumentally match colors to proofs and standards, with a strong understanding of CMYK and spot color systems.
  • Ink Management: Proficiency in mixing inks, measuring viscosity with Zahn or shell cups, and managing solvent-based or water-based ink systems.
  • Mechanical Aptitude: Strong ability to understand, diagnose, and perform minor repairs on complex machinery, including pneumatic, hydraulic, and mechanical systems.
  • Quality Control Instrumentation: Experience using tools like spectrophotometers, densitometers, bar code scanners, and video web inspection systems.
  • Substrate Knowledge: Familiarity with handling various flexible substrates like PET, BOPP, foil, and paper, and understanding how they react on press.
  • Troubleshooting: Demonstrated ability to quickly identify the root cause of print defects (e.g., haze, mottle, streaks, misregistration) and implement effective solutions.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of hands-on experience as an operator on a multi-color rotogravure press.
