Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Develop, maintain, and own complex financial models to assess the economic viability and potential returns of utility-scale solar, wind, and battery storage projects.
  • Conduct in-depth market analysis of regional and national energy markets (ISO/RTO), including pricing forecasts, supply and demand dynamics, congestion, and competitor activities.
  • Perform comprehensive due diligence on potential merger and acquisition (M&A) targets and greenfield project development opportunities, assessing everything from financial health to operational risk.
  • Analyze and interpret federal, state, and local energy policies, tax incentives (like ITCs/PTCs), and regulatory changes to identify risks and strategic opportunities.
  • Prepare and present detailed investment memorandums, research reports, and compelling data visualizations for senior leadership and investment committees.
  • Track and forecast key energy commodity prices, Renewable Energy Credit (REC) values, capacity market prices, and carbon market trends to inform hedging and trading strategies.
    *Monitor the operational and financial performance of our existing portfolio of renewable assets, benchmarking against pro-forma models and identifying areas for optimization.
  • Collaborate closely with engineering and project development teams to evaluate site feasibility, technology selection, interconnection risks, and production estimates.
  • Model and evaluate various offtake structures, including traditional Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), virtual PPAs (vPPAs), and other hedging instruments.
  • Support the structuring and negotiation of project financing, including tax equity partnerships, construction loans, and term debt arrangements.
  • Utilize GIS software (like ArcGIS or QGIS) to conduct geospatial analysis for site suitability, considering factors like solar irradiance, wind resource, land use, and grid proximity.
  • Develop long-term energy generation forecasts and portfolio-level cash flow projections to support corporate strategic planning and risk management.
  • Quantify and report on the environmental attributes of our projects, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions displacement, carbon accounting, and other sustainability metrics.
  • Engage with Independent System Operators (ISOs) and Regional Transmission Organizations (RTOs) to understand and model market rules, transmission constraints, and queue dynamics.
  • Build and maintain sophisticated databases and analytical tools using languages like Python or R to streamline workflows and enhance our data-driven decision-making capabilities.
  • Author white papers, market commentary, and thought leadership pieces on emerging trends and technologies in the clean energy sector.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis for various business units, including marketing, policy, and operations.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap, recommending new tools and process improvements.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate complex data needs into actionable engineering and IT requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies within the data and analytics team.
  • Mentor junior analysts and interns, providing guidance on financial modeling best practices and energy market fundamentals.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for regulatory filings, investor relations, and external compliance reporting.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced proficiency in financial modeling, including project finance, discounted cash flow (DCF), Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), and M&A valuation.
  • Expert-level skills in Microsoft Excel, including complex formulas, VBA macros, pivot tables, and scenario/sensitivity analysis.
  • Strong proficiency in a data analysis and scripting language such as Python (with libraries like Pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib) or R.
  • Demonstrable experience with SQL for querying and managing large, complex datasets from relational databases.
  • Familiarity with data visualization and BI tools like Tableau or Power BI to create insightful and interactive dashboards.
  • Knowledge of energy market simulation software (e.g., Aurora, PLEXOS, GE MAPS) is a significant plus.
  • Working knowledge of GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for geospatial analysis and site selection.
  • Deep understanding of US power markets, renewable energy technologies, and project development lifecycles.
