Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Directly supervise, train, and mentor a team of greenhouse growers and technicians, delegating daily tasks and monitoring performance to ensure operational goals are met.
  • Oversee and execute all aspects of crop cultivation, including planting, irrigation, fertilization, and environmental control, from propagation to finished product.
  • Meticulously monitor crop health, scouting for pests, diseases, and nutritional deficiencies, and take prompt corrective actions.
  • Implement and manage the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program, including the safe and effective application of biological, conventional, and organic controls.
  • Manage and program automated environmental control systems (e.g., Priva, Argus) to maintain optimal growing conditions, including temperature, humidity, and light levels.
  • Develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs) for all growing activities to ensure consistency, quality, and safety across the board.
  • Plan and coordinate production schedules in collaboration with the Greenhouse Manager to meet sales forecasts and seasonal demand.
  • Manage the proper mixing and application of fertilizers and plant growth regulators (PGRs) according to detailed schedules and plant needs.
  • Ensure the proper maintenance and calibration of greenhouse equipment, including irrigation systems, foggers, carts, and environmental sensors.
  • Lead by example in fostering a culture of safety, ensuring all team members adhere to health and safety regulations, including proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Maintain meticulous records of growing activities, including pesticide/chemical applications, crop timing, and production yields for analysis and compliance.
  • Conduct regular quality control checks throughout the crop cycle to ensure plants meet or exceed company standards for size, color, and health.
  • Assist in managing labor allocation and scheduling to optimize workforce efficiency and control labor costs.
  • Act as the key point of contact for operational matters in the absence of the Greenhouse Manager, demonstrating strong decision-making skills.
  • Participate in the trial and evaluation of new plant varieties, growing techniques, and products to drive continuous improvement.
  • Coordinate with the shipping and logistics team to ensure that finished products are prepared and staged correctly for timely delivery.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Greenhouse Manager with inventory management of growing supplies, such as soil, pots, tags, and chemicals, and place orders as needed.
  • Contribute to the development and tracking of the departmental budget, helping to monitor expenses and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Support the onboarding and continuous training of new greenhouse staff on company policies, procedures, and horticultural best practices.
  • Collaborate with the sales and marketing teams to provide updates on crop availability, quality, and timing.
  • Participate in regular production and management meetings, providing detailed updates on crop status and team performance.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Deep knowledge of pest and disease identification and a range of control strategies, including biologicals.
  • Environmental Control Systems: Proficiency in operating and programming computerized greenhouse climate control systems (e.g., Argus, Priva, Hoogendoorn).
  • Horticultural Science: Strong understanding of plant physiology, nutrition, and soil/soilless media science.
  • Irrigation Management: Expertise in managing various irrigation systems, including drip, ebb and flood, and overhead booms, along with water quality testing.
  • Pesticide Application: Holding or having the ability to obtain a state-issued Pesticide Applicator’s License.
  • Crop Scheduling: Ability to plan and execute complex growing schedules to meet market deadlines.
  • Data Management: Competency in using software (like Excel or industry-specific programs) for record-keeping, inventory, and production analysis.
