You are the hands-on force on the tarmac, working in all weather conditions to prepare aircraft for their next journey.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the precise marshalling of aircraft during arrival and departure sequences, using standardized international hand signals to guide flight crews safely to and from the gate.
  • Manage the loading, stowing, and unloading of all passenger baggage, air cargo, and company mail from the aircraft's hold, ensuring proper distribution to maintain the aircraft's weight and balance.
  • Operate a wide range of complex Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including baggage tugs, cargo loaders, belt loaders, pushback tractors, and de-icing units, in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Perform essential aircraft servicing functions, such as connecting and disconnecting ground power units (GPU), pre-conditioned air (PCA) hoses, and conducting potable water and lavatory services.
  • Conduct aircraft pushback and towing operations, moving aircraft from the gate to designated taxiing areas in close coordination with the flight deck and air traffic control.
  • Uphold and enforce stringent safety and security protocols on the ramp at all times, ensuring compliance with all airline, airport authority, and federal regulations (e.g., FAA, TSA).
  • Perform pre-use inspections and basic serviceability checks on all assigned Ground Support Equipment to ensure operational readiness and report any defects immediately.
  • Strategically position safety equipment, such as chocks and cones, around the aircraft upon arrival and remove them prior to departure to secure the aircraft.
  • Maintain clear and concise communication with the flight crew, gate agents, and fellow ground crew members via two-way radio or headset systems to ensure a synchronized turnaround process.
  • Execute aircraft de-icing and anti-icing procedures during inclement winter weather, applying fluids correctly to critical surfaces to ensure flight safety.
  • Sort and meticulously route inbound and transfer baggage to the correct conveyor belts or transfer carts to ensure it reaches its final destination with the passenger.
  • Guarantee the secure and safe stowage of all items within the aircraft hold, utilizing nets, straps, and ULDs (Unit Load Devices) to prevent shifting during flight.
  • Perform a comprehensive walk-around inspection of the aircraft upon arrival and before departure to identify and report any visible damage or anomalies to the appropriate personnel.
  • Guide aircraft to and from the gate with an unwavering focus on safety, maintaining clearance from obstacles, personnel, and other equipment.
  • Manage the timely and accurate transfer of baggage between connecting flights, a critical function for maintaining on-time performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions, property damage, or personal injuries immediately through the proper channels to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Adhere strictly to established airline and airport policies focused on achieving on-time performance goals, working with a sense of urgency without compromising safety.
  • Operate passenger boarding bridges, also known as jetways, or position air stairs to facilitate the safe and orderly deplaning and boarding of passengers.
  • Provide direct assistance to passengers with reduced mobility (PRM), including the careful handling of mobility aids and coordinating with cabin crew for a dignified travel experience.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work environment on the ramp, in the baggage make-up area, and around the gate to prevent accidents.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with the basic cleaning and maintenance of Ground Support Equipment to ensure longevity and reliability.
  • Actively participate in recurrent training programs, daily safety briefings, and team meetings to stay current on procedures and safety alerts.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including Passenger Service Agents, Flight Crews, and Maintenance Personnel, to resolve issues and ensure a seamless operation.
  • Complete and file necessary operational paperwork with accuracy, such as loading instructions, baggage reconciliation forms, and incident reports.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • GSE Operation: Proficiency in operating various types of Ground Support Equipment.
  • Aircraft Marshalling: Knowledge of and ability to execute IATA standard marshalling hand signals.
  • Weight and Balance: Basic understanding of aircraft weight and balance principles for safe loading.
  • Radio Communication: Clear and professional use of two-way radio systems and aviation phraseology.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years. This is widely considered an entry-level position where comprehensive training is provided.

Preferred: While not always required, previous experience in a physically demanding role such as logistics, warehousing, or construction is highly advantageous. Any prior exposure to an airport or aviation environment is also a significant plus.
